Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Computer: Using 2023 MacBook Air and an older Dell Latitude (work). Also occurred on a former 2013 MacBook Pro as well as my Samsung Galaxy S22+ when connected to the home network.

Connection: Have ISP provided modem/Wi-Fi (It cannot be disabled) plus 2 Orbi RBR860 on 7.2.4.5 firmware (primary plus satellite)

Issue: I have 2 websites I am unable to access due to DNS errors. One is my medical provider health system website and the other is the online Orbi management portal, both giving nearly identical messages. Neither are blocked so far as I can tell from the Orbi security app. I have also attempted connecting directly to the ISP Wi-Fi (again, cannot disable) and have the same results. But when I connect to my company VPN on that computer, pages load perfect as do they when I'm on my cellular network on my phone or hotspot. The odd part is earlier this week as I tried to get to the healthcare website, Orbi flagged it as a possible vulnerability which I placed in the safe list (because it is) but this did not change any behavior of access.

Before I raise cane with the ISP, is there any chance this could be something in the Orbi settings? I cannot access the online portal easily to manage it and the app seems to be missing or hiding settings so a bit bumfuzzled on this one. I openly admit I'm still very green with this network and my settings so apologies for sounding so lost here.

It would be useful to see the error messages.  Both the MacBook and the Lattitude have the option to define DNS servers.  What happens if they are set up to use Google DNS? (8.8.8.8) or CloudFlare (1.1.1.1)?

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Try option #2 first...

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Unfortunately I cannot deactivate the ISP WiFi or I lose my TV because they hardcode the cable box to their wifi exclusively (they have monopoly in town). They also do not allow anything other than standard configuration of their equipment for the same reason and they want to force customers to use their wifi equipment exclusively. They are the only broadband ISP in town until late this or sometime next year...

Ok, so give option#2 a try and see if this helps with the DNS issue. Just configure the DMZ on the modem for the RBR.

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Again, I have zero access to their equipment and historically refused to alter any settings due to their monopoly here. If it were my personal modem this would not be an issue but they don't care about customers or service (Optimum/Suddenlink). I will contact them with the info provided however and make a bit of noise about it to see if it helps.

Thanks

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Ok understand. So only other best option would be to configure AP mode on the RBR then...Since your in a double NAT condition which maybe causing problems. Putting the RBR in to AP mode should help this.

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

My work PC can hit the sites perfect when on the company VPN or a mobile hotspot but not when only routing through the ISP environment. My personal MAC also connects when using a mobile hotspot but not the ISP. So it's not the computers but the ISP specifically that seems to be blocking

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Have the ISP help you with either bridging the modem, getting the DMZ configured for the RBR in router mode or configure the RBR for AP mode. Should resolve this.

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Setting the DNS to Google took care of it. It was set to the main modem and seems theirs is blocking it. THANK YOU!!!

Re: Orbi RBR860 - DNS issue with website

Glad you got it working. PBe sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
