Satellites not visible after firmware update

History:  my system consist of CBR750 and two satellites RBS750.  The system for the most part has been working fine except for the last few months I have been having some problems with the satellites.  In checking recently I found that my CBR750 had updated its firmware to: V4.6.5.8_2.0.54 and my satellite firmware was listed as (RBS750) V4.6.5.14 not updated.

I have read several posts on the original problem of the updated firmware back in June 2022.  I have also read that the satellites should be updated first before this CBR or you could have problems (which I do).  I believe I was able to update my two satellites to the most current version 4.6.8.5.

After doing this and restarting the system.  I could no longer see my satellites listed.  I have factory reset all units several times and reconfigured the router.

But still my satellites do not show up as attached.  When going through the app to attach the satellites they both do turn blue saying they are attached.  And I tend to believe they are attached.  But I cannot get any information or see that they are attached on the app.

At times, looking at attached devices.  I can see the satellites (with an IP address, and sometimes without).  I have attempted to connect to the devices through their IP addresses but have not been able to do so.

To say that I am frustrated be very much of an understatement.  And after reading many of the threads and trying different things.  I can see why I and others are very frustrated.

I have read in some of the threads that by using the IP address of the satellite I should be able to get into the satellite, but have not been able to do so.  It does at times asked for a username (admin) and password.  I have used the password that is attached to the satellite have tried the password that I use for the app-nothing works.

As I stated earlier, it does appear that the satellites are working (color blue when restarting), but have no idea what is attached to them or if there even working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dale

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

If you can't get to the RBS web page and the RBS will not connect using a ethernet cable to the back of the CBR, I would probably use the TFTP method to get the FW downgraded.

https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
Need to press the reset button for 30 seconds then release, then it send to PUT the command and upload the FW.
Make sure you enable tftp: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-tftp-windows-10
Video walk through using a tftp client. Use the built in one for windows 10 though. the video is more of an example of how its done:

I had a problem on a Windows 10 PC where this didn't work to use TFTP, so I switched to a Windows 7 PC and the TFTP worked.
Mac TFTP: https://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0001247
Try nmrpflash:

Might ask the user in the Reddit thread if you need additional help and information.

Hoping you can get the RBS reconnected.

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

Current FW that's supported is 4.6.5.14 on the RBS with the CBR and nothing higher.

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/cbk752.aspx#download

You'll need to downgrade the RBS to this version then the RBS should re-appear with the CBR:

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

Thank you for the timely reply, unfortunately I do not understand what you're saying. I think you are saying that I need to downgrade my satellites. I do not understand how to do this. I have tried using the IP address of one of the satellites to log into. I do have a pop-up asking for the username and password each time I put the information in that I believe to be accurate. These boxes go blank. I have no idea how to downgrade the firmware in the satellites. Hopefully you or someone can help. Thank you   Dale

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

Try admin and password in the box?

If you can get in to the RBS web pages, you can downgrade the RBS using the web pages there. You'll need to download the FW file for the RBS that I linked in this thead and set the .chk file using the web browser...

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

I don’t know how to get into the RBS web page.  Also her reasons I know not, one of my satellites has come up in the app and says it is not synced. I went to the firmware update page hoping it would be there but it’s not.

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

I did try your recommendation, but it seemed to be above my pay grade. :-). After doing a little bit more research I was able to downgrade both of my satellites and have them show up on the app. I did this by the following:

History:  my system consists of:

CBR750 Firmware Version V4.6.5.8_2.0.54

Two satellites RBS750.  Firmware Version : V4.6.5.14

I was able to downgrade my two satellites by doing the following:

  • reset the satellites back to default
  • connected my desktop computer directly into the CBR 750 (cable)
  • connected the satellite directly into CBR 750 (cable)
  • one at a time add that the satellite to the CBR 750 looking for the blue light
  • after adding the second satellite (both had to blue light) neither satellite was showing in the ORBI app.
  • Important: because both satellite said they were connected (bluelight), and although not showing in the app.  I left them alone overnight.  The next day they were still not showing in the app but were listed under attached devices with an IP address.
  • Using the satellites IP address.  I was able to get into the satellites app and downgrade each satellite.
  • After doing this they showed up in the router app.
  • After checking all my settings.  I did a backup of the configuration file

Question: am I now on all of the right firmware for my devices. Is there a more current firmware for my satellites? If there is should I downgrade my CBR 750 and then upgrade the two satellites, first. I am somewhat fearful that the system may upgrade the satellites all by itself, putting me back to where I started with this request.

I do for the most part believe if it ain't broken don't fix it, it seems from reading the different things on Netgear community that the firmware sometimes updates all by itself, and it seems from what I have read that the satellites need to be updated prior to the router.

Thank you for your help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Satellites not visible after firmware update

Glad you were able to get the RBS downgraded.

For ANY and all FW updates for the CBR and the RBS that come with the CBR kit, always refer to the CBK link for any and all future updates for these two items:

https://www.netgear.com/support/product/cbk752.aspx

Do not use other RBS or RBK FW versions.

Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
