Sudden wireless devices speed drop
Hi all,
Background: I have a 1Gb/s connection with ethernet straight into my apartment. The apartment is very old and has thick, brick walls and is a stupid shape, so I got an RBR750 and satellite, set it all up with a wireless backhaul as I didn't want to drill through a bunch of walls and everything was good.
Issue: In the last few weeks all wireless devices have dropped their connection speed from >700mb/s to ~300 to 400mb/s. The devices are Win10, Win11, ChromeOS, IOS and Android. Plugging a device into the RBR with ethernet gets a good result of ~900mb/s. The very weird thing is that I have a NAS connected to the satellite (wireless backhaul) with ethernet and that gets > 750mb/s when downloading.
What could be causing this?
Thanks for any help or pointers.

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
Wireless is sensitive to distance and building materials. 5ghz drops of much quicker than 2.4ghz. Plus brick will block its signal quite a bit. that 300-400mbps is about reasonable unless you're sitting right next to the router/satellite without intererence.

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
Thanks for the reply.
The speed drop is 'everywhere' whether I am next to the router or satellite or a distance away. I do realise I am beeing 'greedy' and that the speed is fine for every day use. It's just bugging me 🙂
Thanks again

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
What modem/gateway do you have?
Are you using any parental controls/qos/Armor?

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
There is no modem in the apartment. There is fibre to the building and ethernet from a switch to each apartment. Plugging straight into the ethernet port, or into the RBR with ethernet gets expected results of ~900mb/s. Armor is enabled. WMM is enabled on both bands.

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
So the internet is shared between everyone?
It could be a form of QoS on the switch if everyone is sharing the connection.
Or it could be other users saturating the bandwidth.

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
I'm really not sure how it's dealt with at the ISP switch but I can say that I have never seen a performance dip when using ethernet.
This feels like everything is connecting on wireless N rather than AC/X but the devices are reporting AX. It could be busy channels I guess but there doesn't seem to be much scope for changing channels in the Orbi, is that right?

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
You can try changing the channels a bit on it.
Easier if you go through the browser method to do so.

Re: Sudden wireless devices speed drop
No change.
I just had a thought. I run IPv6 as well as 4. Could that be anything to do with it?
