Re: NAS visible to only some computers on network

I’m unable to access my Synology NAS drive from three computers on our home network. I cannot tell if the problem lies with the Synology NAS, our router, or the computers in question.

Here is the relevant information:

– Synology NAS is connected to an Orbi Satellite, which communicates with the main Orbi Router (RBR50). The home router address is 10.0.0.1, and the drive is 10.0.0.26 (IP is reserved for it).

– All devices on the network can connect to the NAS apart from these three computers.

– The three computers that cannot see the NAS cannot even ping it at all. Synology Assistant will not find it. HOWEVER: find.synology.com will locate it when run on these machines. They will then be unable to connect to it. It’s like any connection to the drive is being completely blocked on these machines.

– The problem began quite recently, but I cannot say why. I thought the cause might be an MacOS upgrade to something like Ventura 13.3.5 (a), but that only happened on two of the affected machines. The third is very old and running an older version of OSX.

Is it possible that the Orbi router is somehow blocking just these devices from connecting to the NAS? Why would that be?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

Is seem you have a router infront of the RBR router if the RBR is currently using 10.0.0.x: This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.

What happens if you turn OFF the RBS and connect everything to the RBR?

The router is from a German ISP, Pyür. Model number: "CH746CE"

I have disabled the Wifi networks that ISP router/modem produces. However, I don't believe I changed any other settings on the modem.

Any advice on how to perform (1) or (2) that you recommended?

Contact the ISP on how to configure there hardware. I'd try option #2 first.

The ISP has now switched their router/modem into pure bridge mode. However, Orbi is still on 10.0.0.x. The internet port has changed from 192.168.0.5 to 100.90.1.37. So there must still be some Double NAT going on. I also can't seem to find the login for the ISP's router.

What do I need to do to get rid of the double NAT for good? Complete reset of Orbi so it stops with the 10.0.0.x thing?

No, I believe 100.x is a WAN side IP address now so would not be a NAT here.

Just means that the RBR is still using the 10.x IP subnet and it won't change back to default 192.168.1.1 unless you choose to set it back to that, use something else or keep the 10.x IP subnet string or factory reset the system and setup from scratch which you could do if you want. Then you'll see 192.168.1.1.

Well, the NAS access problem seems to be solved! Just needed to wait a bit after rebooting Orbi.

Looking under the Internet Setup, I can see info on the router. But neither the IP nor the Gateway address seems to access the portal.

I'm not sure I totally understand. I'm not trying to access an Orbi product page. I'm trying to access the configuration portal on my ISP's router (the one that they now switched into bridge mode). Could it just be that switching it to bridge disables any webpage/portal it has?

Pretty much convinced 100.90.x.x is a shared address space, from the 100.64.0.0/10 RFC . IANA-Reserved IPv4 Prefix for Shared Address Space as per RFC6598, commonly deployed for CGN, carrier grade NAT.

You will still be in a dual-NAT world, and have no control of the ISP public assigned IP and/or the router-

Complain to your ISP for not assigning a public routable IPv4 address.

The Orbi has selected the 10.0.0.x network because of the WAN was configured for a popular RFC1918 address before. With the new assigned CGN IP address, I thing you should be able to change the LAN subnet to 192.168.1.x/24 if you prefer.
