Orbi Network - Adding another Satellite

Quick synopsis:  New to community.  I have a three story townhome w/ Orbi router now on top floor of the home (office location).  I currently have a satellite located on the middle floor of home and another in basement.  About twenty devices online and home is about 2,500 sq. feet.

I bought another satellite just because it seemed like the right thing to do to maximize the 400MPS I'm paying for through Comcast.

Question:  Where should I place the additional satellite?  Should I place on top floor about 30 feet away from router and keep 1 satellite on middle level and basement?  Or should I just go w/ router on top floor and additionall satellite in basement?  The basement is where the gaming system is and the majority of the time is spent by my teen and younger one?

Thank you!

Re: Orbi Network - Adding another Satellite

I would dearly love to have your problem (how to maximize use of 400mb speed).  Alas, I fear you would have been better off with the RBK53 (AC3000), which has a higher backhaul capacity than the AC2200 system.  It has dedicated radios for the 5G backhaul vs. sharing the antennas with 5G devices.  With only about 800 sq. ft. per floor, one Orbi on each floor probably provides enough coverage.  Adding another satellite in the basement doesn't improve the overall capacity.  It may even "Daisy Chain" to the existing basement satellite, which would lower the backhaul capacity.

Before adding this last router, it might be a good idea to verify that the placement of the ground floor (1st floor in the US) and basement satellites to ensure that they get the highest backhaul speed and are close to the user devices.

Re: Orbi Network - Adding another Satellite

What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. You can move the satellite out farther as needed and until the signal isnt' good for the RBS. Users have posted distances 60ft or more.

Crimp - Thank you for the reply and nugget on backhaul; it prodded me into some research.

I'm definitely going to check the placement using this WiFi app which checks signal strength.

Thanks.

Re: Orbi Network - Adding another Satellite

Thanks for the reply.

The router is on the top floor (say top right hand corner of townhouse), the satellite is located on middle level in left hand corner - maybe 30-40 feet away?  The other satellite is in the middle of basement maybe 25-30 feet away.  Building materials are stone front, 2"x4" studs, drywall, etc.

Thanks.
