(It just ruins the whole day when a problem does not get solved. Damn.)
My "absolute last resort" is to tftp the image. Netgear's routers are built with tftp (the most primitive file transfer program ever created). Netgear publishes instructions for Windows here: https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP
I have uploaded firmware to an Orbi using tftp. (It was either that or box it up and send it back to Amazon, and I had only one day left on vacation to get it working before I left the state to come home.) Surprised hell out of me when it worked.
My Google search seems to indicate that Mac's come with tftp, but I know almost nothing about Apple products.

Re: Orbi RBK50 Firmware upgrade problem
You followed the instructions on this web page: https://kb.netgear.com/000061530/RBR50-RBS50-Firmware-Version-2-5-1-8
and did a Manual Update to 2.2.1.212 first?
How did that manual update fail?

Re: Orbi RBK50 Firmware upgrade problem
i've tried 2.0.0.74 / 2.2.1.212 and 2.5.1.8 . in chrome you can see the upload reaching 100 % then it says wait for Orbilogin.net to respond .
the you get a connection error . when i log back in , nothing changed on firmware level .
as i said , satelitte is ok with most recent firmware . firmware upload is possible wireless ?

Re: Orbi RBK50 Firmware upgrade problem
Have you tried another browser?
I see no reason why a firmware update could not be done over WiFi, but I have never tried it.
I am so old fashioned that I always access my Orbi by IP address, not the DNS name. Mine is the usual default, 192.168.1.1.
(not that this should make any difference, but then it's supposed to be working and isn't)
Did you do a "factory reset" on the Orbi before starting all this?

Re: Orbi RBK50 Firmware upgrade problem
Given that the issue is with the router, I would power off the satellite and do the factory reset on the router. Then, connect and try the manual firmware update to 2.2.1.212.
Power outages are a major irritation. There have been several reports of Orbi's not surviving them. I have my modem and Orbi on a UPS. (Not that electronics are expected to fail if the power goes out. Everything is supposed to be designed to survive power outages. And, most everything does, over and over. )

Re: Orbi RBK50 Firmware upgrade problem
If possible, use a wired connection to one of the LAN ports of the RBR50 from a laptop or desktop to perform the firmware update. This might be due to having such an old v1.x firmware on it that it does not like upgrading over WiFi. Since your satellite is already upgraded, leave it turned off while upgrading the router. With the wired connection, upgrade to 2.2.1.212 first. Once it is successfully installed, upgrade to v2.5.1.8 firmware.
