Orbi RBR50 is not supporting 900Mb+- on the WAN to LAN test

So I'd like to call NG's attention to the following test results for Orbi RBR50. I'm not seeing anything near 900mbps on the WAN to LAN test. Using both iPerf and Duckwares simple WAN to LAN test program between two LAN connected PCs and a Gb LAN switch. 

 

Seems like the HW NAT accelleration or Cut-Through that should be working on this router, isn't.

A R7800 also tests good for 900mpbs the last time I checked. 

 

The Orbi is factory reset and setup from scratch with no additional configurations. Disney and Armorare not enabled. No RBS were attached. We expect routers that are reset to factory defaults should support 900Mpbs on the WAN port if officially designed and supported by NG. 

 

Seems to point to something in FW possibly as others have also posted about not seeing 900mpbs on there Orbi systems. 

Is this speed officially supported on Orbi?

Seeing better results than on prior versions of FW. Still not seeing anything near 900Mbps if Orbi is supposed to support 900Mbps. 

I'll do a factory reset on the RBR50 and re-test.

Please describe your network setup. What is the expected speed and the actual speed you're getting? Do you have Circle and/or Armor enabled? If so, do you get the same speedtest result if it is disabled?

Are you using a flat network cable?  I'm getting 573Mbs down and 37Mbs upload on mine with cox gigablast.  I haven't tested without the router but seems pretty decent and using a Motorolla MB8600 modem

@Blanca_O In the UK, we can't get speeds anywhere near 1GB but I was seeing slow throughput for my 100mbps.

 

All is good with mine again now though so it must've been a blip.

I can confirm this. I have a Fiber link, 1000 / 100. When I connect through 1Gig Ethernet from my MBP directly to ISP router, make a PPPoE login on the Mac, I can get 950/100, easily and repeatedly.

Then, ISP router is set to bridge mode, Eth LAN/WAN to ORBI RBR50: download speed is consistently around 500 MBps, upload stays near 100. I tested with both my MBP connected through Eth to ORBI and also using firmware included speed test. Same results, which lead me to conclude that ORBI is simply not capable to use all the available download badnwidth.

 

(Just to prevent noob-oriented questions - my ORBI is on latest firmware, I always test using Ethernet directly to router, always using the same server for all speed tests etc)

Don't rely on the Speedtest app internal on the RBR. Always test external speedtest app from Ookla. Also factory reset the RBR and setup from scratch. This time do not enable or use the QoS/Speedtest app, Traffic meter or any access controls, Circle or Armor. Then run your external speedtest app.

 

So does your report 900Mbps with external speedtest app thru your Orbi when wired to the back of it?

First, I wasn't reporting a problem; I was reporting my observations and empirical conclusions. But, to answer your question, like I said in my original post that I had linked to, my PC is wired directly to the Orbi.

Also, please allow me to go off on a tangent here, which is not directed personally at you, but Netgear, since I have been having this email conversation with them over the last 12 hours about resetting my router due to some other actual bug in the firmware I have reported: I will NOT reset my RBR every time there is a problem or need to debug something. I am not a paid Netgear tester who is supposed to do all the work and take all the risk. The last time Netgear support told me to reset & restore my router, here is the answer I gave: "Please let me tell you first that I had been a senior software developer & manager of development teams for the last 30 years, working on a billion dollar a year product used by millions across the world. So, when I look at software problems and talk about them, I come from a place of deep experience. In this particular case, resetting the router should absolutely be NOT necessary. .... Since the firmware update, over the weeks, I have done things like naming all my devices (40-50 of them!), changing certain settings (IPv6 etc.) as well as utilizing reserved IP ranges for certain devices. Even though Netgear would claim that a backup/reset/restore should work fine, given that just a simple [....my reported problem...] is exposing a bug, any bug in the backup/reset/restore codepath would cost me weeks worth of work, and if it didn't work, I would probably throw away my Orbi and go buy Google Wifi. No hardware manufacturer in their right might would routinely recommend a clean reset & restore after a software update. That is like saying an iPhone needs to be backed up & wiped & updated & restored during all iOS updates. ..... If a company doesn't trust its own software to work without a reset, how is it that I am expected to trust it that my weeks worth of detailed settings will be preserved by the same software? It would be trivial for any engineer to restore a lab version of the router with the CFG I attached in a few minutes to see if the problem is obvious, compared to the risk I would be running by following your directions. Orbi's CFG file isn't even a human-readable text file, like GS108Tv3 [8-port Smart Managed Pro switch] backup files are, so that if something goes wrong, I won't know what to set manually, and there are tons, short of taking screenshots of all relevant Orbi settings pages first. Is this really considered good customer experience?"
Sorry to vent/rant. But I am really bothered by this "reset first" approach. It should NEVER be required, let alone REQUESTED as a matter of company policy for every firmware update and every problem report. That is just lazy.

Were just trying to keep this focused on the issue at hand for those who are not getting 900Mbs (thru) the Orbi RBR on a 1Gb ISP service. 

 

To ensure you testing this accurately, Don't rely on the Speedtest app internal on the RBR. Always test external speedtest app from Ookla. Also factory reset the RBR and setup from scratch. This time do not enable or use the internal QoS/Speedtest app, Traffic meter or any access controls, Circle or Armor. Then run your external speedtest app. Report your findings. 

 

We are working NG support currently to give them as much information about this as possible. NG is reviewing this and looking into it. Any and all debug logs and such, please forward to @Blanca_O

After many hours of reading this forum, my first post.

First I want to thank you, Furrye38, for your advice in many topics. After ever update I reload the same firmware manually, reset all units and reconfigure. Very time consuming.. I still experience disconnects because the RBR50 and/or RBS50s drop WiFi signal. And Orbi is not friendly in maintaining connection with Apple products. Better with Samsung. Maybe I start a topic on that subject later.

 

Now to your main question of this topic, does RBR50 support 900Mb+?

I have tested it.

My setup is Fiber (1000Mb/1000Mb)>Fritzbox 5490 (router mode, no WiFI)>RBK53 (AP mode, daisy off, v2.3.5.30, wireless backhaul).

The tests are done at a "quiet moment" nothing turned off or disconnected except for the testing PC. So the results are an indication not an absolute number.

Yes, AP mode doesn't seem be be effected and users should see near 900Mbps while in AP mode. It's when the RBR is in router mode is where we see a discrepancy with some users.

Just to clarify, my RBR is in the router mode (not AP), connected to Comcast cable modem that is in bridge mode with radios turned off, and all my wired computers on my home network are getting up to 1000 speed even though the Speedtest page on the router's web admin page (I am NOT talking about the iPhone Orbi app's speedtest screen) consistently reports ~500. So, the discrepancy is between what Orbi actually passes through (i.e. whatever you get from the ISP) and what it reports (i.e. its internal speed test results).

 

I am sure some people are not seeing full ISP speeds, but those all seem to be related to things like having both cable/DSL modem and RBR as router which causes conflicts, or too many radios are on on modems & routers or other devices around that cause interference, or bad cables with low bandwidth capacity, or missing or improper network cable terminations in random places on the network.
