RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

I have a RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 I bought and I have tried several times to hook it up and always get the message cannot find router.  Not sure what to try?  My tp link router works fine with my internet.  Looking for help and suggestions.  Thanks

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Please explain how you are setting up the Orbi.

Are you using the Orbi "app" or the Orbi web interface to set up the Orbi?

Are you using a device with an ethernet jack or a device with only WiFi to set up the Orbi?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

I have used the app on my iPad and then tried my iPhone with same result. I have Ethernet cord connected directly from internet modem to Ethernet port on the Orbi

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Thanks.  Best to stick with the iPad for now because of the larger screen.

The Orbi comes from the factory configured with a WiFi name (SSID) and password that are written on the bottom label (in tiny print).  Mine also came with a plastic wrapper around the router with the same information - which I took off and threw away immediately and was really annoyed later.

Connect the WAN (yellow) port on the Orbi to the ethernet jack on the modem.

(at this point, it is a good idea to know exactly which model of modem you have - brand and model number)

Turn Orbi on.

On the iPad, you have to connect to the Orbi WiFi network by selecting the WiFi that matches the label and entering the password.

At THAT point, it's time to start up the Orbi app.

(If you followed these steps already and it failed, please let me know)

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

p.s. I forgot to mention that many people decide to change the Orbi WiFi name and password to match the router that they are replacing, for two reasons:

  1. All of their WiFi devices should connect automatically to the new Orbi just like they did to the old WiFi.
  2. If they decide they want to "go back", it's just a matter of unplugging the Orbi and plugging in the old router.

Thank you I will give this a try.  Was getting frustrated with it not working.  It is supposed to be a good setup.

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Those of us who frequent this forum have been very happy with the Orbi.  There are occasional issues, and helpful people have usually found solutions.  When I (seldom) look at user forums for other products, I see the same sorts of issues.  I think the routers with ugly black antennas pointing in all directions are sort of cool, but my wife prefers the "minimalist" look of the Orbi in our living room.

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Tried what you said to do.   The Orbi wifi showed up on my iPad but would not take password from bottom tried several times and then the Orbi wifi disappeared and would not come back even rebooted modem and Orbi with no luck. Not sure what to try next?  Sending a pic. Do you read that a vanillapanda451?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Yes, I read that as "vanillapanda451".  The WiFi name that showed up was ORBI58, correct?

Since you have not yet configured the Orbi, there is no harm in doing a "factory reset".  Stick the end of a paperclip into the tiny "reset" hole next to the power plug until the power LED turns from green to amber, and then begins to flash.  At that point the Orbi should reboot and is supposed to have exactly the credentials on the label.  i.e. ORBI58 and "vanillapanda451".  The iPad should connect.

Any chance you have a wired PC connected to the RBR and use a web page to set up the Orbi system that way?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Did factory reset and was able to connect to Orbi with password but said no network data even though connected directly to internet modem from internet port on Orbi. I then rebooted everything and Orbi would not even show the my wifi list. Not sure what is wrong?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

After the factory reset, the Orbi WiFi name appeared on the iPad "My WiFi" list, and entering the password enabled you to connect to it.

Then where did the "no network data" message come from? (a) iPad? (b) Orbi app?

So, the Orbi was turned off and back on again, and now the Orbi WiFi name no longer appears on the iPad "MyWiFi" list?

Very strange

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

The no network appeared beside Orbi on my iPad wifi list after it took the password .  I never tried running the Orbi app as figured no internet to its wifi connection so would probably not work.  Yes I rebooted modem and Orbi and it would not show up on my wifi iPad list again.  It’s like something is blocking internet from my modem to Orbi.  When I hook back to my drink router everything works fine?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

I am guessing that you do not have a computer that can be ethernet cabled to the Orbi.  This certainly limits the options.

Even though the iPad said, "No internet", I would attempt to open the Orbi app anyway.  The trick now is to get the Orbi WiFi name to appear in the iPad list of WiFi networks.  Is there an option to "rescan"?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Using a wired computer takes WiFi "out of the picture".  Dinsconnect Orbi from modem, turn on the Orbi, plug the computer into one of the LAN ports on the Orbi router, then turn on the computer.  Open a web browser, and connect to http://192.168.1.1.  This should bring up a login screen where the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".  This should start the configuration process.  At some point it will want you to connect the internet cable, to turn on satellites, enter something (you can remember) to replace "password", etc.

When it offers a chance to rename the WiFi, most people set it to exactly the same as their existing WiFi router (same  SSID, same password).  This allows devices that were using the D-Link to automatically connect to the Orbi because it "looks the same."

Please check back once you have a chance to try this.

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Can’t find a laptop yet to try it. I connected to Orbi again with password but no internet and a 169 ip which I know is not good. Something must be blocking the internet. Is it my isp? Thoughts?

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Yes, 169.254 indicates the device was unable to get an IP address and has assigned one "by itself".

Are you using the same ethernet cable that was used to connect the TP-Link router to connect the WAN (yellow) Orbi port?

What is the brand and specific model of modem that the TP-Link and Orbi are being connected to?

Yes the exact same Ethernet cable.   The modem is technicolor with ACN cable internet

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

I am running out of ideas.  I do not see in the previous messages that everything was powered off.  i.e. turn off the Technicolor modem and the Orbi.  Turn the modem back on.  Wait for it to stabilize (3-4 minutes).  Then, turn the Orbi back on.

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

I have done all that several times.  I am going to get a friend to try at their house and if it still won’t work the Orbi unit must be defective.  If it does work for them then I don’t know what to do.  I might have to sell it but was really wanting it for good wifi.

Re: RBK50 — Orbi AC3000 Cannot find router

Maybe the main router is defective?  I bought it at online auction and they said it was refurbished. I will see if it connects at my friends house.
