RBR50/RBS50

Hi all! I have an RBR50 with an accompanying RBS50 Satellite. The Router is a beast and gets me on average 400+mbps. This is hardwired to the modem on the first floor of my home. The second floor has the satellite in the room right above the router and is certainly less than 15 feet distance away from each other. The satellite is putting out less than 5mbps even when standing right next to it with my devices. Im also getting those high speeds from the main router standing right next to the satellite so there is no loss between the two based on location. Im entirely confused. Also, neither product will update its firmware. Both are stuck on V2.14.16_1.0.0.11

I cannot force update as the iOS app just states there was an issue with the update when I select search for updates in the app. Manual updates on my MacBook are not possible (I downloaded the latest update packages) but cannot access Orbi Login on my computer. Can anyone explain why the satellite is such trash because I don't believe this issue existed when I fist installed the device but since I don't use it, I found out about it through someone else in the household and am shocked its been this bad this long.

Where did you get this Orbi system from? That FW version is not a valid FW version for NG stock FW for this model system. Can mean that other non NG providers did there own FW for your system then gave you your system. IF so, NG stock FW won't upgrade it.

Re: RBR50/RBS50

It might be helpful to double check the firmware version number.  Version 2.1.4.16 was released in 2018.  Click on the "+" sign on this support page:

A manual firmware update is the obvious solution.  The URL http://orbilogin.net is a fake URL that is supposed to be intercepted by the Orbi router, which will respond with the IP address of the router itself.  If this is not happening, then the solution is to open a web browser to the IP address of the router, which is the same as the gateway IP address.  (Most of the time, this is 192.168.1.1)

Re: RBR50/RBS50

Hello @GVee ,

Welcome to the NETGEAR Community!

I understand that you are experiencing issues with your network with your RBR50  on firmware v2.1.4.6. In most cases, this can be caused by the satellite's placement. If the satellite is placed too close to the router then the device may connect to the router instead of the satellite even though the satellite is closer to your device. To resolve this move the satellite further away from the router. However, the first step to solving this issue is to ensure that you are on the most updated firmware.

Please update your router and satellite to the current firmware version 2.7.5.4. You may have to update your system in increments until you are able to download the most current firmware.

Try these increments when updating your Orbi system (Be sure to update the satellite first then the router for each increment):

 Start with firmware version: 2.2.1.212

Next, download Firmware version: 2.3.0.32

Then, download Firmware version: 2.3.1.60

Then, download Firmware version: 2.5.1.8

Then, download Firmware version: 2.5.24

Now, download Firmware version: 2.7.3.22

Finally, download and install Firmware version: 2.7.5.4

Best,

Kevin

I do not recall where we got the setup from. It may have been a bonus purchase during the Verizon Fios installation.

Re: RBR50/RBS50

Verizon was known to have there own Orbi FW that differed from NG stock FW. Same hardware however Verizon did there own FW development for Orbi systems they marketed to there customers. You'd need to check with Verizon to see if there is anything newer from them.

Re: RBR50/RBS50

Thats correct, we got the router and satellite in 2018. The FW is definitely what I stated it is. The IP address I had already accessed before posting the issue I have. It opens up my Verizon Fios Router Admin Access, which I use to turn off the provided router during installation to not interfere with the signal coming from the Orbi. As for that Orbi Login, yes, I understand the concept it is technically like the IP address to access the router just like the one mentioned above for my Verizon Router. Issue is, I only have Orbi App access in my phone and it opens with face recognition. I do not have the Login Username or PW. I downloaded the latest firmware (I believe I Stated that in the OP), but have no way to install it. And trying to update the FW through the Orbi app on my iPhone comes back "There was a problem checking FW Update" (see attached screen capture)

Re: RBR50/RBS50

Thank you for the reply. I understand that there may be a proximity issue, but I can't understand why when connecting directly to the satellite I get 5mbps while Im getting over 400mbps from the main router and Im both near the satellite when I get these numbers and even further out from the router on the 1st floor (yet closer to the satellite which barely is doing anything).

Something to get with Verizon about then regarding any and all FW updates from them.

Re: RBR50/RBS50

Ill give it a shot thank you. I just cant wrap my head around how Netgear hardware would be affected by Verizon since it was an entirely separate packaged product. An accessory that they happen to sell, sort of like Apple selling beats headphones or logitech products. And the strange part is that the version seems to not have ever upgraded itself this entire time. I only realized this after all these years because the person who uses the satellite never mentioned anything as they were getting low but functional speeds from the main router 2 floors down. I may just prepare the household for an interruption in service and start a reboot, reset PW's, and start from square one all over again. In any event, I appreciate you and all the folks on here for offering your knowledge and know-how. Ill post updates when I get something notable to disclose.
