RBS20 have to Satellites and trying to add two more

I have been happily using an ORBI RBS 20 with 2 Sats for a long time.   I just bought 2 more (used) and I can connect to them via wifi, but I cannot get them to sync to the existing.   I am using the App and have tried many times, the steps seem very straight forward.    I did do a factory reset.   Any ideas to help would be great.  I moved to a much larger home and the new 6 seems pretty expensive.

As a second question for additional boosting can I plug ethernet into a Sat or are the plugs just for outgoing?

Thanks

The FW on the newer RBS maybe older or prior to what you have currently loaded on the existing system which the RBR and RBS all need to be using same version of FW.

What you need to do is factory reset the RBS. Wire connect a PC to the 1st satellite. Already have the most current FW version files downloaded on to this PC.

Wire connect 1 PC to the back of the RBS. Factory reset the RBS, wait about 5 minutes. The PC will get a IP address from the satellite. The RBS will be 192.168.1.250. Use this IP address in a web browser to log in to the satellites web page. Log in as admin and password. Use the satellites web page FW update feature to select the FW update file that was unpacked from the .zip file. Then factory reset and then re-sync the satellites to the RBR.

I seem to remember reading posts that the Orbi "Add a satellite" function is limited to displaying three satellites at one time.  People report using a "work around" to have more than three satellites:

  • Add satellites using the Orbi web interface, not the Orbi "app".
  • Once there are three satellites, adding more requires a "trick"
  • Power off one of the existing satellites.
  • Wait until the Orbi Attached Devices page shows the satellite as "Disconnected" and ignore the option to delete it.
  • Use the "Add a satellite"  procedure to sync another satellite.
  • Power that existing satellite back on.

What appears to be going on is that the web page for Adding a satellite can only handle three satellites, whereas the Orbi router can be connected to as many as six. (I have not seen reports of more than six.  Who knows how many would work?)

Thanks for the reply.   After having my laptop for about 4 years I realized it does not have an ethernet plug...   I now can at least get internet from the satellite on its name.   But still no luck synching.

As @FURRYe38 mentioned, many of us are more comfortable using the Orbi web interface and a computer physically connected to the Orbi.  This is not a requirement. We are simply more familiar with that process.

The point of doing a Factory Reset on those new satellites is that they were probably sync'd to a different Orbi router at one time and will be trying to connect to it.  I recommend ignoring the instruction in the apps "Add a satellite" to place the satellite in a final location.  How can you see what is going on if the router and satellite are in two different places?  I would power up the satellite in the same room as the Orbi router. Do the Factory Reset on the satellite (not the router) and then begin the Add a satellite process.  Makes it a lot more convenient to be pressing 'sync' buttons when you do not have to run down the hall or up the stairs.

After satellite #3 is connected, you may find that in order to add satellite #4, one of the existing satellites should be powered off during the process (and then turned on again).  At least in the Orbi web interface, there is space in the web page for only three satellites and people use this trickto add $4, $5, and #6. (the most I have ever heard of is six satellites).

FURRYe38 is also correct that it stands to reason that the network will be the most stable when all units are on the same firmware release.  Personally, I would wait to do this step until after the satellites are all connected and I can use the regular Firmware Update process to do so.

p.s. That laptop can access the Orbi web interface over WiFi.  I prefer the physical contact, but it is not a requirement.

Re: RBS20 have to Satellites and trying to add two more

Though it may not be a requirement, if the RBS are to far out of sync in FW from the RBR, then it will be required as the only way to get the RBS updated is thru there web pages with a connected ethernet cabled PC or laptop. Just FYI.

Great Idea.   Amazon says I will have USB to Ethernet tomorrow.
