Yes, you can use it as you describe. I have my Hue hub plugged into one of my satellite ports and have, in the past, had my laptop connected for testing puposes.

It's witchcraft. They are creating wired ethernet out of thin air.
I have an old non-networked HP printer conected to an HP JetDirect print server and I have that plugged into a satellite ethernet port in a room at the upper back corner of the house.
