ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Hello,
My Orbi Satellite-2 will not connect via hardwired Ethernet, it will only connect to the backhaul via 5G. The firmware on the satellite is Hardware Version: RBS840
Firmware Version: V3.2.18.1_1.4.14
This is my topology, please excuse I made with MSPaint
According to this thread:
https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi/Orbi-AP-mode-and-Backhaul-connections/td-p/1966133
also it is impossible to post anything useful in this because everytime I tried it kept erroring with "Your post has been changed because invalid HTML was found in the message body. The invalid HTML has been removed. Please review the message and submit the message when you are satisfied." I am not putting HTML in the post.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Daisy Chain option will not be seen on Orbi AX system FW. It's all automatic.
If your using ethernet connected RBS, it won't be used.
Use same configuration for my RBS. 1 RBS has 3 switches daisy chained on one segment after the RBR.
Do the RBS connect to the back of the RBR and see a wired status?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ethernet switch in the configuration?
What CAT# lan cables are you using? CAT6 is recommended.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
WOW thanks for your quick response!
Do the RBS connect to the back of the RBR and see a wired status? I dont understand. Could you maybe rephrase? As soon as I plug the Orbi Satellite-2 into the TPlink switch, it gets a 1Gigabit link light and starts flashing like its communicating, but it immediately disappears from the Attached Devices list in the Orbi RBR page.
What is the Mfr and model# of the ethernet switch in the configuration?
switch #2 = TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 and switch #1 = TRENDnet TEG-S380
there are multiple other devices plugged into those switches and working just fine, the only issue is the Satellite-2
What CAT# lan cables are you using? CAT6 is recommended. I'm using CAT6 for everything.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Plug the SAT2 directly to the back of the RBR with out switches and test.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Furry e38 helped me resolve intermittent issues with my Orbi 753 system, which also had the satellites daisy-chained with switches similar to what you are trying to do. I was not aware that ethernet switches that use the IEEE flow control protocol can cause problems with Orbi's. It appears that the TL-SG105M2 switch you are using does use this flow control protocol, so it may well be the cause of your problem.
I replaced my switches with Netgear ProSafe GS105E and ProSafe GS108E switches (readily available at big box retailers) and my problems were eliminated.
Direct connecting both of your satellites to the router (without any switches) as Furry e38 suggested is a good diagnostic test, and if that works, trying different ethernet switches that do not use flow control would be a good next step.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
OK I took a 100 FT Cat5.e cable and plugged it into the back of the Satellite-2 and other end into the back of the RBR840 and the backhaul shows wired now for the Satellite-2.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Ok, so that kind of points to the ethernet switches your using maybe cuasing the problem.
I recommend trying a different brand of switch. NG GS-105/108v4, D-Link DGS-105/108 and HP ProCurve 1400/1800 series switches work for Orbi systems.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
I've replaced the TP-Link switch with another TRENDnet TEG-S380 and the Satelite-2 is still not showing up. It seems pretty ridiculous to me that Netgear cannot create a backhaul connection through 2 simple switches.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Same result with TP-Link TL-SG105. No wired backhaul connection for the Satelite 2

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
In the manual:
The connection between the satellite and router is good.
The LED lights blue for three minutes and then turns off.
Blue
Which is exactly the behavior of the Satellite 2, but it still doesn't show up in the attached devices.

What happens if you swap RBS with each other, does the problem follow or remain?

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
I swapped the satellites as you suggested. Satellite 1 is where 2 was and satellite 2 is where 1 was. Now, since satellite 1 is where 2 was, satellite 1 is now having the same issue as what satellite 2 was having before. Satellite 2 is now working hard wired, but it has a direct connection to the back of the RBR 840 and it's not passing through a switch. If I had known that these satellites could not be hardwired through a switch, I would not have purchased them. For $800 dollars it is really crazy to me that these things cannot communicate with each other through a simple switch. I have tried 3 different switches and none of them work. I am really disappointed with this.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
So this is point to the switch and or cabling that you have in place were SAT2 was origianllty placed. Since you swapped RBS and the problem remained at the one location this points to a cableing issue or a incompatible LAN switch. Even though it's un managed, the green ethernet features of these switch maybe causing problems.
NetGear GS-105/108v4 and GS308v3, D-Link DGS-105/108 and HP ProCurve 1400/1800 series switches work for Orbi systems.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
So I have 2.5Gbps throughout and now it has to suffer because Orbi cannot communicate through those. Does anyone know of a 2.5gbps switch that will work with these Orbis?

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Well your kind of limited since Orbi AX models only support 1Gb on there LAN ports.
I don't have a 2.5Gb switch...yet.
NG GS-105/108v4 and GS308v3, D-Link DGS-105/108 and HP ProCurve 1400/1800 series switches work for Orbi systems. These are all 1Gb switches.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Don't get me wrong, I never have and am not expecting the Orbis to get 2.5Gbps out a 1G interface, however I am expecting them to auto-negotiate at 1G and be able to communicate with each other, like every other I have hooked up to my switches. Again, for $800 an alternative is looking pretty attractive.

Re: ORBI AP mode ethernet backhaul
Its probably the brand and type of switch your using. Orbi does work with ethernet switches, should be 1Gb though. Again, the ones suggested have been tested and do work. No idea about the ones your using. Data flow thru what yoru using maybe not fully being handled correctly. Causing problems between the RBR and RBS.
