ReadyNAS NV+ hangs/freezes; please help diagnose #24042647

My ReadyNAS NV+ has started hanging/freezing after being powered on for 30-90 minutes. Once it hangs, I can't access it via Frontview or SSH and there's no way to restart it other than pulling the plug. Once I restart it, everything seems fine; then it hangs again in 30-90 minutes, whether I'm accessing data on the NAS or not.

I have performed volume scans and checked/fixed boot quotas.
Memory check via the boot menu returns: “Memory OK”.
Smart status OK on all 4 drives.

See the Smart Info for the drives here: http://otisproductions.com/misc/smart-info-ReadyNAS.gif

The logs show no problems other than the improper shutdown after I pull the plug, because that's the only thing to do when the ReadyNAS hangs. But even if I reboot it properly, it hangs again within 90 minutes or so.

On the advice of Netgear support (via online chat), I reinstalled the OS via the boot menu. This seemed to solve the problem for about an hour, but then it returned.

Here are the particulars:

Model ReadyNAS NV+ [X-RAID]
Firmware RAIDiator 4.1.13 [1.00a043]
4 x 2TB Western Digital drives WD20EARS-00J2GB0
Memory 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
No USB drives connected.
1 TB allocated to Time Machine backup.

I bought this ReadyNAS (and drives) in February 2011.

Any ideas on diagnosing & fixing this are much appreciated!

Are you able to power down the NAS, remove the disks (label order) and test the disks using WD LifeGuard Diagnostics?
  • I'm in a Mac environment, and WD LifeGuard Diagnostics seems to be Windows-only.

Do you have a friend with a PC that could help?

As well as testing the disks I would recommend running the memory test boot menu option a few times.

    To run the memory test:
    1. Power off the ReadyNAS
    2. Press and hold the POWER button. Roughly every 5 seconds a new boot menu option will appear and the disk LEDs will blink. Release the power button after you see the memory test option.

Having another look at the SMART stats I see that disk 1 has 1 Current Pending Sector. That's most likely the bad disk, but I'm not sure.

Edit: Can't run the offline SMART test while the disk is online.
  • mdgm made the right call on this. I pulled disk 1 and replaced it with a new 2TB drive. The ReadyNAS re-synced and all is well now.
