ReadyNAS and SATA3 vs SATA6?

I have not yet bought one (but I am considering it) and after checking the specs it seems even the supposed top-of-the-range ReadyNAS 3220 and 4220 families only have SATA3 interfaces rather than the SATA6 that has been standard on hard disks and computers for quite some time now. This in theory halves the potential speed of the ReadyNAS as it limits it to 3Gbps (or 300MBps) vs. 6Gbps (or 600MBps). This was quite a shock as even laptops come with SATA6 these days, let alone a high-end server.

Does this make a real impact on the performance of the ReadyNAS?

One wonders how NetGear are still able to find 'antique' SATA3 chips these days.

SATA III is 6Gb/s, SATA II is 3Gb/s and SATA (I) is 1.5Gb/s.
SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II and SATA I

Can you provide a link to the information you found on the type of SATA interface used?

Now gigabit provides 1Gb/s. So drive speed is not likely to be a huge bottleneck in the 3220.

For the 4220 though drive speed does become more important.

Even with the 3220 you can bond multiple 1Gbps Ethernet channels so using the two built-in ones would create a potential load of 2Gbps (full-duplex) which might be constrained by the SATA interfaces. (The 4220 has 2x10Gbps Ethernet.)

With regards to a source of information for the type of SATA interface. I could not find this on the NetGear site and I suspect from your comment you had the same problem. However I did check multiple resellers websites and those that listed specs all listed them as SATA 3Gbps and frankly based on past experience of NetGear I find this believable.

    See http://www.ballicom.co.uk/search/readynas+4220+rn4220s
    and http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/NETGEA ... 98860.aspx

As mentioned I found multiple examples.
