Streaming with Transcoding
Is there any product that enables a ReadyNas Ultra to do on-the-fly Transcoding?
This would enable people that have a DLNA enabled TV but where the TV only shows selected codecs. For example the Sony Bravia wants movies to be in AVCHD. I've looked around but did not find it.

Which Ultra do you have? Unless it's an Ultra 6 Plus it's not going to be good enough to transcode 720p. - TonVH1AspirantMy Sony Bravia has no Plex-client so this is not an option. I would prefer to eliminate any Mediaplayer and that is why I am looking for one with transcoding. In my opinion a Ultra 2 should be able to do this especially when it is just standing around doing nothing else.
I did see a package that does Airvideo and for that transcoding is also needed. So I hope to find something. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserJust to be clear, Plex is a DLNA media server, so it does not require a Plex client. If the Bravia has a DLNA client it might work.

Aha, Going to try that out. Thanks for the information. - dsm1212ApprenticeWhile I highly recommend plex, I think if you get over the need for transcoding you'll be much happier. Use a beefy PC to do the transcoding to a format that won't need transcoding before copying the file to the NAS. There are only a few free/shareware tools you need on the PC to do this. I've got a pro-6 that can keep up with transcoding but I still convert anything I'll "keep" on the nas. If you do this, then the readydlna server is really good too. I convert videos to either m2ts, mp4, or mpg (mpeg2) with AC3 audio or 2CH audio and all of these seem to work with everything in my house (sony, samsung, lg). Plex is still nice if you want to drop in something you'll watch once I guess. The Ultra has an Atom processor (I think) which will struggle transcoding 1080p so if you need that you may have no choice.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI agree that the ultra doesn't seem suitable for 1080p transcoding.
- thebeakAspirantIndeed. In fact, the Pro 6 (which I have) just manages transcoding for 720p. 1080p can be questionable (depending on the encoding, etc). Any of the Atom cpu-based NAS boxes Netgear makes (or any other manufacturer, for that matter) is barely adequate for transcoding 720p.
