trying to upgrade frimware (as recommended) on RS6400. I have two macs. one running el capitan and one running sierra. I downloaded the file clicked on it and then:
There is no application set to open the document “R6400-V1.0.1.24_1.0.18.chk”.
help?

You don't want an application to open the ".chk" file. You want to
use the router's Web interface to "Upload" that file to the router. If
your R6400 is like my D7000, then ADVANCED > Administration > Firmware
Update should get you to the page where you can "Browse..." for that
file (in your Downloads folder, perhaps?), and the Upload button should
do the rest.
I use Firefox. I'm guessing that you use Safari. With Firefox, when
you download a ".zip" archive (like the R6400 firmware kit), it saves
the ".zip" archive, which you then need to unpack explicitly. I gather
that Safari typically extracts the contents of the ".zip" archive, and
saves them. In this case, that's the ".chk" file (which is what you
want to send to the router) and the Release Notes (.html) file (which is
usually not very informative, but it does offer instructions).
