Sounds plausible. Sadly, the non-psychics in your audience (of which
I'm one) might not know all/any of the following:
Why do you want to use the WNDR3400v3? Replacing something else?
(What?) New installation? Connected to what? (Modem?) Any useful
information at all about your situation might help.
You might start with an oft-neglected resource:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTFM
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least). Read. For a used
device, a settings reset is usually a good way to start. Look for
"Factory Settings".

Re: Initial set up for a n600 wireless dual band WNDR3400v3
when you say your previous router died what happened to it? No more power? No wifi signal? Also there are manuals on the netgear.com site under support where you can write the model number of the router and it will tell you how to do the setup.
