How to configure GS108Tv2 switch Bandwith

Hello,

What I need is how to configure the switch to allocate the same bandwidth (upload or download) to each port when the computers are all on. But when 1 or 2 computers are turned off the bandwidth for the NAS increases and so forth. When all the computers are turned off 100% bandwidth is allocated to the NAS.

At the moment the DS215J witch runs download station hogs all the bandwidth. Upload bandwidth is the most affected download bandwidth its not so bad.

PS Internet speed is 50Mbps download and 3Mbps Upload

Any help will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Community!

 

GS108Tv2 Smart Managed Switch offers rate limiting function per port in the egress direction (it means the traffic going out of a port, going INTO our PCs or NAS). Take it this way: this is for all the traffic between your PCs and your NAS, maybe other devices, not only internet. And only the traffic entering into your devices.

 

But I am afraid you are referring to your Internet bandwidth, correct? If that's the case, GS108Tv2 will not be able to achieve your goal. First because your "upload" bandwidth issue relates to the internet traffic going out of your PCs and out of your NAS, which is not going to be filtered by the egress rate limiting on each port of your switch here. Second because you need such "shaping" - let's call it rate limiting still - only for internet traffic, mostly saving your internet upload bandwidth, so the internet traffic going out of your NAS and the internet traffic going out of your other PCs only. Of course the same rate limiting would be great if this could happen in the other direction as well (your internet download bandwidth). 

 

Are you sure your router/firewall can't do that based on your PCs and NAS local IP addresses or MAC addresses?

 

If not, we'll need to consider more advanced switch platform (Fully Managed Switches). For instance, a quite 'direct' replacement could be the M4100-D12G (GSM5212-100xxx) in M4100 series. There are obviously several strategies with M4100's for achieving your goal and I'm sure other members in the Community will tell.

 

Let's keep it simple though: M4100 series supports ACLs with embedded rate limiting function in the ingress direction (traffic going into a port or into a VLAN interface) and that is enough. Other more advanced series like M4300 series can do that in both ingress and egress directions, but in your case this is not really a requirement.

 

With a switch like M4100-D12G, we would create one "Internet VLAN" in addition to the primary VLAN1 in which your PCs and NAS are connected. We would assign one Access Control List (ACL) to this "Internet VLAN" in order to rate limit to << xxx Kbps >> the traffic coming from each local IP in your network (so your PCs and your NAS) into the Internet VLAN. This would relate to your Upload internet traffic on every machine. Either you could attribute the same speed to all devices, either create several ACL rules with differentiated speed per IP address or local MAC address in your network. The other solution, maybe better, could be this time an ACL which would rate limit the "Internet VLAN" overall traffic in its IP interface ingress direction coming from your machines, so again all the upload internet traffic coming from your NAS and PCs. Setting this rate limit @ 3Mbps for the entire "Internet VLAN" would then automatically set a fair repartition of this 3Mbps ingress bandwidth amongst all your local machines for their internet upload traffic, and for their internet traffic upload traffic only.

 

In order to make this work, we would need to set up this "Internet VLAN" with its routing IP interface, which would become the gateway for your PCs and NAS. One port on the switch would physically connect your router, and this port would be set as another routing IP interface, this time permitting proper routing between the Internet VLAN and your actual router. Setting another ACL on this physical interface going into your router, would allow us to rate limit the traffic from the internet (your router) into the "Internet VLAN" - so this time your machines' download internet traffic. Again, either per local machine, or globally with a 50Mbps shaping on the interface so that there is fair repartition for all your machines in your network for internet download.

 

Finally, some static routes would need to be entered in the switch, and the opposite static routes would need to be entered into your router, for the internet traffic back. This would imply some subnetting in your network, and some changes in your PCs and NAS IP configurations.

 

You will probably notice this does not seem trivial at first glance, but not so difficult to implement using M4100 series web interface or command line. The Community will help you, should you want to take that route. But please verify your router capabilities, maybe this is more straightforward for you?

Thank you. I would highly advise you check your router (internet gateway) first, maybe it can let you shape the traffic per local IP or local MAC in your network. If not, yes the M4100-D12G (GSM5212-100ES) would be a good choice for you.
