3TB HDD / Backup

Hello there.

I saw some posts about the management of 3TB HDD.

Well, at the moment I have a 2TB HDD installed and i would like to purchase a 3TB HDD.

Any chances for me to use it as USB backup drive?

And to move all the data to the new disk to be used in the Stora for to use the old 2TB HDD as USB backup?

Tks!!

Re: 3TB HDD / Backup

1. 3TB is not yet supported.

2. The only mechanism for growing in to a larger disk is to copy all the data off the old smaller drive to another location, then insert the new drive in the Stora alone, and then copy the data back on to the new drive. So if your 2TB drive is full then you need another area where you can put 2TB as an intermediary. But 3TB is currently not supported. An easier route would be to get a comparable NAS which does support 3TB and then just copy directly from the Stora to it. I'd recommend the ZyXEL NSA 221.

rsinj- Curious, regular ReadyNAS also does not support 3tb?

Re: 3TB HDD / Backup

Possibly - I haven't followed ReadyNAS developments lately. However, the other I mentioned is more for home users, in line with capabilities of Stora more than ReadyNAS.

3TB HDD / Backup

Stora does work with 3TB HDD's but they still have yet to come out with a firmware upgrade to support it.

I don't get it. I've manually changed my Stora to get 3TB drives to work but Netgear is either refusing to do it or just being lazy about it. This is not a difficult fix for Netgear and could be done in the next upgrade but I havn't seen anything about an upgrade coming out.

Why wouldn't netgear want the Stora to run larger drives???

Is Netgear dropping support for the Stora???

New firmware does not pop up every week. general schedule is every quarter.

Pretty obvious, really. It costs money to develop and test new firmware.
No new revenue is generated by updating firmware.
Netgear would prefer you to buy another device.
Those happy with a 2GB + 2GB capacity will still buy the Stora.

I will ask support about Ready NAS...
I saw some are now sold as ultimate multimedia solution, I want to know what're the differences, and overall if it is silent as the Stora, I use it at home...

Does anybody own a ReadyNAS?

Bye!

Re: 3TB HDD / Backup

1. There are more posts then I can count of customers asking for 3tb support, most are users with 2tb drives wanting more space on the Stora and not another device. I think it's crap to say, "Well, it doesn't support 3tb drives so go buy another device that does" when a simple change to the partititions can fix it for the customer.
2. This fix for 3tb drives didn't just show up, I found it on a post on another forum that was over a year old and the last firmware upgrade was in November. I followed the instructions and it worked great but I'd rather have it working with a good firmware than with a hack. I can understand releases being on a schedule but this could have easily been added to 2.6 and brought smiles to tons of customers and given the Stora even more longevity.

I have a ReadyNAS Duo and it is a good unit - it's almost 2 years old. It is a step up from Stora, probably overkill for the average home user. More of a NAS and less of a media-server oriented product.

http://www.rnasguide.com/2011/12/10/readynas-duo-v2-a-beta-testers-review/

"3TB drive support

These new devices support 3TB drives out of the box! This means that the Duo v2 is the cheapest ReadyNAS ever to support 6TB of storage (before redundancy and overheads) and the NV+ v2 the cheapest to support 12TB of storage (before redundancy and overheads). As even higher drive capacities become available, firmware updates can be expected (if needed) to add support."

Well, with v2 of the Duos it looks like they added more of the multi-media/streaming/cloud capabilities into it as well as added performance. Price is same as the prior version Duos so it is a good piece of hardware for the money.

Re: 3TB HDD / Backup

Duo is old readynas that compare to new like RDNP2100 (intel).

Intel base Base the current trend by most manufacture. I use RNDP2100 for testing I got shipped from Negear and this is not rack mount but for desktop unit, far and beyond better than stora which I have it next to this NAS.

Also has new cloud add-on, Egnyte (egnyte.com) only with intel base NAS.

Re: 3TB HDD / Backup

The ReadyNAS x86 (Ultra/Pro) line (has Intel CPUs) has supported 3TB drives since RAIDiator 4.2.16 (http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_16_Notes) which was released about 1 year ago now.

The new Duo/NV+ v2 (new ARM line with ARM CPUs) also support 3TB drives. Do note that the Duo/NV+ (v1) do not support 3TB drives. Do be careful to make sure you are buying the v2 (says ReadyNAS Duo v2 or ReadyNAS NV+ v2) in the bottom right on the front of the unit) if purchasing a Duo/NV+ for 3TB drive support.

The 2-bay and 6-bay ReadyNAS units are the quietest and the 4-bay units are a bit more noisy.

One of the impressive things about the ReadyNAS line is the lengthy period they provide firmware updates for (all of which are free). Back in 2007 NetGear acquired Infrant (the company that created the ReadyNAS). Even now they are still developing firmware updates for the very first ReadyNAS models released back in 2004 (see 4.1.9 beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222) and discontinued long before the acquisition by NetGear. Admittedly these devices are similar to the Duo/NV+ (v1) which were discontinued recently but the continued support is impressive. Unfortunately 3TB drive support is unlikely to come to the Sparc models (these run RAIDiator 4.1.x or earlier), but important features like AFP, Time Machine, CIFS etc. are still being maintained.

Personally I'd go with a ReadyNAS Ultra or Pro. The Ultra has a 3 year warranty and lacks business features, the Ultra Plus has a faster CPU than the Ultra. The Pro has the same CPU as the Ultra Plus, but it has a 5 year warranty and business features.

I like the 6-bay units for the great expandability and the optional dual-redundancy, but they're not for everybody. One of the great things about the ReadyNAS line is that you could buy e.g. a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and later decide you need more drive bays and move your disks across to an Ultra 6. See http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another

The X-RAID2 expansion on the x86 and ARM lines is great. See X-RAID2 in Action. With a 2 disk NAS you can replace each disk (one at a time, wait for resync to complete before replacing next disk) with a higher capacity disk and then expansion will take place.

I have ReadyNAS units on all three platforms (Sparc, ARM and x86).

Re: 3TB HDD / Backup

Yes definitely I'd recommend the Intel (Ultra/Pro) models too.

Sounds like you have a Pro 2 which came with one disk pre-installed (e.g. RNDP2110 which is Pro 2 - RNDP2000 - with 1x1TB drive pre-installed).
