I was able to connect the adapter to the wifi but I can't get the computer to recognize the adapter for wireless internet use. Using windows xp

So the problem is in Windows. Have you installed the drivers?

You may have to use older software for XP. Most people no longer use that dangerous version of Windows on the internet.
