A few different questions
1. Recently, HD videos files copied entirely from SD cards over past 8 or 9 years are not compatible with Apple Final Cut Pro. They've updated the app and I've been trying to determine what to do about accessing these older files. At the Apple support site it says thatyou can store Final Cut Pro libraries on local storage volumes using SMB files system. So far, so good. But then it says
"If you’re using a shared storage system that uses the SMB protocol, the SMB volume must originate from a macOS server or a Linux server running Samba 4.3.4 or later configured with modules for Apple compatibility."
So, to eliminate this requirement I want to find out if the ReadyNAS is compliant with this.
2. I back up the ReadyNAS516 to another ReadyNAS nightly using the built in RSYNC app. It seems to work fine. But it's set to "incremental". I wonder if it's OK to use that type of back-up year in and year out.
3. Lastly, would anyone know when Netgear is going to fix the problem with directories showing incorrect information. Every day, I will go to a share with about 1600 directories. Sometimes the list shows up perfectly. But some time later (a few minutes or a half hour), it will show that there are about 400 directories. Then a few moments later (5 seconds or 30 seconds) it will show 1000 directoires. Then it might show all of them or again show perhaps 600 of them. Finally, several seconds or more later it will show that all of them are there.
I've had this problem and asked about a fix for it for years. Initially this was a directory on a different share. I thought that by creating a new share and moving the files there it would make a difference, but it has not.
It's so difficult to trust anything on this server when you go to see if a subdirectory exists and it shows that it doesn't so you try to create a new one only to find that the directory is already there. Or, you open a directory and click on a file and suddently, rather than opening the file, the listing changes and your looking at a directory several hundred up or down the list of where you were.
Would anyone know when Netgear is going to fix this problem?

What ReadyNAS model is it?
Generally speaking, the risk of long-running incremental backups is that something could go wrong with the destination disks. If the old unchanged files are never read, then it's possible errors would never be detected. So ideally you'd run maintenance functions on the destination NAS (in particular scrubs, file system checks, disk tests). Some of the older ReadyNAS don't have these functions.
If you are concerned, you can set the option to do a full backup periodically.

6.9.5 runs Samba 4.7.0. There is a setting for MacOS compatibility.

I haven't seen this (though I'm not a Mac user). Do you have disk spin-down enabled on the NAS? If you do, perhaps try disabling it, and seeing if that resolves the problem (or not).

Now, regarding rsync backups: I backup using rsync/incremental each night at midnight. The disk has five or six shares and each runs separately. The unit has 5 or 6 TB of data, but all the backups take just a couple of minutes because most of the data is quite static.
It backs up to a ReadyNAS 6310. On that box Defrag and Balance run once a month. I had been doing quarterly Scrubs, but some material I found suggested that Scrub is so intensive that it could overtax the disks.
The disks on the newer ReadyNAS are all "enterprise" 4TB (using X-RAID) from the authorized HW list. The older NAS has three 3 TB drives and two 4 TB drives, also from the list and also "enterprise" quality.
Regarding the Linux NAS system for FCPX after telling about Samba and "configured with modules for Apple compatibility" it has a line of code:
vfs objects = catia fruit streams_xattr
I have no idea what that means or if I need to add it somewhere, where it should go.
Finally, regarding the very strange, on-going directory issue, I never let the disks spin down, they run 24/7. I hope that this issue will be fixed in a new software release. It's just so uncomfortable, going to save a local file to the server and to look for the directory in which it should go and the NAS shows that the directory doesn't exists. Then 20 seconds or five minutes later, there it is or, to be correct, was all along).

Well, I run scrubs quarterly. Scrubs check all the blocks in the data volume, which makes them a useful disk and filesystem diagnostic. I don't think that will have any detrimental effect on the disks. Still, I personally wouldn't run them more often once a month.

The NAS sets this if you enable "Enhance MacOS"

This line isn't present if "Enhance MacOS" isn't set.

I guess it could be a NAS bug, but it might also be something specific to your setup. Hopefully other Mac users will comment on whether they've also seen it.
