DNLA Client Needed

I have a ReadyNas Duo (soon to be upgraded to ReadyNas Pro 6, and run the iTunes server and SqueezeBox server on the NAS to access my music around the house via WiFi. I primarily use the SqueezeBox server in conjunction with two Logitech SqueezeBox Booms and I must say the system works very well. The Duo/SqueezeBox combination can handle mp3 files and Apple LossLess files too. It's great to have a system where I can access all my music files without my Apple iMac being on.

Well that's the music, but wouldn't it be great if I could do that with movies too. I have all my movies and videos stored on my NAS and can actually access them via DNLA on my iPad and iPhone without my iMac having to be on. I have a few Apple TV's which are great in principle but won't work with DNLA (Unless I jailbreak them). Therefore to watch my movies I have to convert them via HandBreak into an iTunes compatible format and them import them into iTunes. In truth I leave them on the NAS and access them via referenced files. This works really well but it does mean that I have to leave my iMac running in order to access the movie files.

I can also access the music on my NAS using my Apple TV's via the FireFly iTunes server on the NAS (I don't need my iMac to be running for this). Now if the iTunes / FireFly server on the NAS could also stream my movie files then that would be fantastic as its possible that I could access them on my Apple TV's. Unfortunately this is not possible, unless someone else has found how to do it.

I'm unable to run the PLEX server on my DUO so will have to wait for my PRO 6 to arrive. PLEX is a brilliant piece of software and all we need is a DNLA client to be able to access it. I gather one can do this with an XBox, but I don't have or want an XBox.

With the PLEX server running on the NAS, I will be able to access my movie files and play them on my iPad using the PLEX App. I assume that I will then be able to stream the movie files from my iPad to my Apple TV's using AirPlay, but that sounds a bit long winded. A more direct method is needed.

Basically I want to access my movie files on my NAS with a DNLA client or find a way that I can do it with my Apple TV's without jail breaking them. The rumour mill suggests that IOS 5 or the next update for the Apple TV's might incorporate an App store for the Apple TV. If that is the case, then it might be the solution as I'm sure PLEX would develop a client application for the Apple TV to work in conjunction with its PLEX server on the NAS.

I just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on this or suggestions how the movie files on the NAS can be accessed with a DNLA client. I did think that the ROKU box might have been the solution but unfortunately it cannot handle DNLA.

Regards

  • Note that Plex Media Server is *not* DLNA compliant - it is a proprietary server that requires specific clients. The mac client however can access DLNA servers.

If you are not willing to jailbreak your ATVs then for the moment you have no means to access NAS media except by using iTunes to stream media.

There is a Plex client for Roku boxes which does not require any mods as far as I'm aware.
  • Do you have any experience in jail breaking the Apple TV2? I guess that if I did jail break it I could install XBMC or PLEX on it.

I didn't realise there was a PLEX client for the ROKU boxes. The ROKU boxes are quite reasonable in price so I will check them out.

    Cheers
  • Afraid not - I use a mac mini hooked up to my TV instead to avoid the issue and due to other requirements I have

FYI: There is also now a Samsung TV Plex client in addition to the LG support Plex offer directly. I actually have an LG TV with Plex support, but it's not quite there yet in terms of quality so I personally wouldn't recommend that yet.

That said, I've read good things about the ATV2 Plex client, and also about the Roku client which is a $99 option. Given you have multiple ATV2's, and you can always restore a default config (ie back out the jail break - or at least I know you can with the iPhone as I've done that and wouldn't expect ATV to be any different) why not give it a go? There's a detailed tutorial on the Plex wiki which doesn't seem difficult to follow

I can access my Plex Server from my iPad using the Plex App.

On the Plex App on the iPad there is the option for Airplay but it doesn't seem to work. The audio comes through but no video. All my video files are in iTunes format.

    Any suggestions.

It seems odd that there is facility for AirPlay on the iPad Plex but it doesn't work.
  • Not sure video over AirPlay has been officially opened up to 3rd parties yet, though there are hacks around that do this - an iOS5 feature?

You'd be better off asking on the Plex forums to get a fully informed answer
