Map root to windows drive - ReadyNAS NV+ v2
Hi,
I have read lots of posts and blogs and tried lot's of stuff so please don't tell me to try google... Let's work out the perfect solution instead and thereby "become" a great google search-result!! =)
A very simple question that I think really should have a equally simple answer...
"How do i map my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 root (c:) to a free drive-letter in Windows 8?"
I need this to be able to access it easily from different applications and in the explorer. I also need it to auto-map on windows start.
Since I installed Windows 8 as well as some updates on the NAS this is no longer possible. I used to have \\[NAS-IP]\c$ mapped to a drive in windows 7... Without this possibility my NAS is pretty useless...
I have tried making an NAS access user account with the same username/password as I use in Windows, but no luck there... still can't access c$...
Thanks in advance! /Jesper
NAS: ReadyNAS NV+ v2
Version: 5.3.10

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOnly the admin user can access the entire C volume as a share. This is only meant for administrative access.
Have you considered mapping different network drives to the shares within the C volume? - TheJesperAspirantThe most user friendly way of using the NAS would be to view it just as another harddrive and this is my goal. It is my own NAS so I do have access as an administrator. Still I get an error message when trying to access \\[NAS-IP]\c$... This wasn't the case before with my NAS. Do I have to add it to the workgroup or domain or something like this? Anyone who managed to get this to work under Windows 8?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredRemove the $ from the path and try again. There is no $ in the name of the share.
- TheJesperAspirantHi,
Mdgm, perhaps that's what I'm doing wrong! Must have gotten it mixed up with the '$'... C is evidently a built in share and not accessed using regular networking methods which I was using... I will try as soon as I get home... Thank you!

More information:
Connecting to the ReadyNAS as admin will allow you access to the root of the data volume, also referred to as 'c'. The 'c' share is an administrative share (automatically built-in) and only accessible by the admin account. You can map a drive to it by opening a command prompt in Windows and entering the following command:
net use t: \\ip.address.of.nas\c /user:admin Enter the password for 'admin' to connect to 'ip.address.of.nas': The command completed successfully. Please note that connecting as admin gives you full root privileges to the data volume and can result in data loss. Use this option with care.
Additionally, this only works in “User Mode”, not in “Share Mode”. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes, it's not like a Windows machine that has a hidden share with the $.
You have a v2 so you don't have the EOL "Share Mode" option. - TheJesperAspirant1. Trying to access \\[IP]\c in explorer gives error message (no login prompt):
[Window Title]
Network Error
[Main Instruction]
Windows cannot access \\[IP]\c

2. My windows user has a corresponding account (name and email set to [myname]@outlook.com with identical password) set up in ReadyNAS dashboard. This ReadyNAS user is added to Administrators group with GID set to 101. UserID is 1008...
3. Whats wrong? How can I access the C share... \\[ip]\c (where [IP] is the ip of the NAS)...
Thanks in advance!!! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOnly the user with name "admin" can access the c share.
Again, viewing the entire volume is intended for administrative purposes only. For other uses it would be best to map network drives to the individual shares. - TheJesperAspirantOkay, I suppose I should use the same admin account that I use to access the dashboard instead of looking on the security tab in the dashboard. However, when I enter \\[IP]\c in explorer I do not get a login box, I just get the error message described above... If I write "only" \\[IP]\ I do get a list of all manually created shares on my NAS. It is just that the "c" cant be accessed.
I tried entering credential manager to remove all passwords related to the nas (run: control keymgr.dll) but this did not help getting login screen.
I removed all accounts on the NAS, and also the one matching my windows login to see if I got the login screen... I did get it for all the shares BUT the "c" share which still gave me the error message. I tried accessing the other shares with the "admin" account but I did not succeed with this, the login screen kept popping up every time i tried. The loginscreen insisted on using my home PC name as a domain, like MYCOMPUTER\admin or similar, at least it looked that way in the login box (in Win8).
But it is strange that the admin account get login prompt for the other shares, but not for the C share also...
So, how to procees now? Could the c share or the built in admin account have been disabled?
/Jesper - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI think if you login as the "admin" user you will then be able to browse to the C share.
As this share is only for administrative use it's not important to be able to map it easily. - TheJesperAspirantThe admin account dont give me access... Using the same credentials that I use when connecting to the ReadyNAS dashboard. I looked under settings / security and my setup is as follows (dont know if this affects anything).
Access type: Local Users
Workgroup name: WORKGROUP
Could anyone confirm that they managed to connect to the C share on a Windows 8 Machine using the "admin" account?
