RN102 Expansion through eSata port
I was wondering if there was possibly any type of expansion similar to the EDA500 for the RN300 and RN500 series NAS; for the RN100 series?
Or is the eSata port just for an external hard drive/back up solution?
As I'm realising this device is great and now am wishing I got either a RN104 or RN314.
Thanks in advance!

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
I think the eSATA port on he 102 is just for using with an external hard drive (e.g. for backup)

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
Say if i had a RN104 and RN102, is there any type of raid or method that could be used to use all as one volume with a certain redundancy?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
There is no way to integrate the USB/esata devices into the raid array. One problem with that approach is that those devices aren't always present (it is much more likely that you will accidentally disconnect or remove power from an external drive than accidentally removing a tray).
The RN104 has reasonable expansion headroom, with 5 TB drives expected to reach the market relatively soon - getting you 15TB in RAID-5. Even the RN102 would reach 10 TB in jbod mode (no redundancy) with those drives. If you need a bigger NAS, then buying the RN3xx or RN5xx is a better option than using the RN1xx esata/USB ports. With the higher end NAS you can create a second array on the EDA500 later on, or get a 6 bay unit and leave some bays for further expansion.

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
Hi,
I also have a question concerning the eSATA Port of the 102 which is familiar to this discussed here, so I dont open a new thread: Is it possible to add a third drive via eSATA as a permanent share data e.g. for only videos? I dont want to add it to the raid array!
My idea is, that I build a Raid-1 with the 2 internal drives for more important data, photos and music and for videos I use a separate external (but more or less permanent) drive on eSATA. I cant find an exact demo how the share data is configured atm, but is this possible?
thanks and regards,
sebastian

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
Sebastian, yes, you can setup an external drive for videos etc. But so far as I can tell it's read only access, you can't write to the external drives.
If someone has a solution to that so you can read/write, please let me know, but in admin shares, "FIle Access" there are no options to check for write access that I can find

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
You cannot expand it directly, but trough the EDA500 you can expand the storage with 5 Bay trough the eSata.

Re: RN102 Expansion through eSata port
The RN102 doesn't support the EDA500 expansion - that is limited to the RN3xx and above.
