RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Hello,

Since I've upgrade my Readynas 102 to the new firmware (with no problem), I'm experiencing strange behaviours during shutdown.

This appear if I stop it with the power button or form the web interface.

During shutdown the power button blink, I hear the disks stopping but it stays powered with the power button blinking.

All seems really off, I can't ping it, and the only way to turn it off is to remove the power jack.

This not happens every times but 9 /10.

I'm not sure if this is relate but it seems that everything goes well if I didn't acess the RN via DLNA.

Do you have an idea, I don't see anything in the logs.

Regards

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Hello,

Without any clue to solve my problem I finaly manage to do a factory reset from the boot menu.

I follow the informations from http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22892 and everything seems fine.

I will think twice before applying the next firmware upgrade, it's a lot of work to get the device working normally 😞

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

I've got the exact same issue since 6.4 upgrade.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

I've also got this issue.

I have my RN102 set to automatically startup for an hour every morning to backup my RN104. I get an email notification saying it is shutting down, the device seems to be powered down, I can't access the shares, or ping it either, but the lights are on, and the power led is flashing. The only way to shut it down is to pull the power, which  am reluctant to do.

same to me.

The RN 102 does not shutdown properly. Neither with pressing the button on the case nor with the timetable shutdown configured in the NAS Software

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Same issue with the RN314 and firmware 6.4.0, wont shutdown, wont reboot, cant access shares, etc. I am wondering if the firmware update or a change it made did not complete fully as my NAS is set to shutdown overnight.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

My finding is that I used a blank disk and did a factory reset and the shutdown is normal. But when I change the hard disk to the one which I was using it in nas doesn't turnoff.

Not sure how to remove cache without losing data.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

It looks like the firmware update wasnt coded to allow for a planned shutdown whilst the drive data was still being checked after the initial boot post firmware change.

Hello Lagamel,

Welcome to the community!

May I ask if you are getting the same problem with the others who are not able to access the shares?

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Hello Netrage2,

The OP's issue may be different from yours since you mentioned mutiple issues on your post.

Are you not able to access the admin page too? Or, you are able to but it works intermittent as well on accessing the shares?

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

why do you think it is the cache, which prevents the NAS from shutting down properly ?

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

@JennC

I can access the NAS for a few minutes straight after it boots but then it drops the connection somehow and the admin and shares are not accessable and the device wont reboot or turn off. Raidar and my PC can see the NAS but not access it at htis point. From looking at other posts on the forum it looks to be the same issue but not everyone has noticed all of the issues yet. Another user has had some success in deleting his snapshots in the brief window of access which has eventually resulted in a working NAS (minus snapshots)

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Hello JennC,

I can't access anything, the device looks like it was shutdown but it's still power on. (no ping, no webadmin page, no shares, no DLNA,...)

I just made some tests transfering some files via nfs and after the poweroff was ok.

I will make some tests later but the not clean poweroff seems to appear only if I have accessed my music files via DLNA during the session.

Regards

@JennC

The NAS is now stuck at the boot stage (full fan) so I cant access the logs anymore.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

The NAS has come back out of boot on its own (eventually) and the 'Act' light is now busy doing something so I have managed to get into the admin for long enough to disable the power down to keep the NAS on 24/7 and I will wait overnight and see if the NAS is any better in the morning. I would guess its all related to the quota/snapshot changes and the fact that my snapshots are at around 4TB in size and they are using up full system resources to be reprocessed. I managed to remove some but not before it dropped me out again and I dont want to risk another reboot to get the logs.

If its still the same tomorrow then I will let you know.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Update:

Overnight the NAS seemed to complete the reprocess of the snapshots and the NAS let me access it fully this morning. I have since removed all existing snapshots and stopped any new ones from being created.

Looking at the logs, the event that keeps repeating for the time period that the NAS was unusable is related to reprocessing of the snapshots so it looks like any other request to the NAS be it for data access, admin access or even for it to reboot was ignored due to the overloaded work that the firware update had started. Now that work is finished the NAS seems to be usable again.

The only advice I can give to others with the same issue is to try and remove any existing snapshots, stop new ones being created and leave the NAS on 24/7 until it becomes stable.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Hello.

I also did a factory reset and it didn't work for me, however I did change my MTU to 9000.  I have just reverted the MTU to 1500 and I now appear to be able to shutdown without issue.  After doing your factory reset did you alter you MTU value?

Thanks.

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

Hello Crapsnot,

No I didn't touch the MTU and left it at 1500.

I just give a try and set MTU to 9000 : I got no problem to shutdown.

I remember a thing, when I was with the 6.2.5 firmware I got problems with the integrated DLNA server.

Following some advices, I installed manually a newer version of the minidlna server.

Perhaps my problems came with this manual installations...

Re: RN102 don't shutdown properly since 6.4.0 upgrade

hm, but that's not the kind of solution I'm looking for 😞 .

You have to backup all your data before and afterwards you have to set up your ReadyNAS from scratch, because you did a factory reset.

Should I start a new discussion ?? Or will there be some more support from Netgear for this topic?

I guess you can simply live with the problem until you get a fix.

Does 6.4.1 beta help?
