ReadNAS 314; Admin Password reset -
Was recently unable to access the Admin Page - or any of the shares created. I pulled all four drives and performed a password reset.
I am now able to access the Admin page, but of course it has no Vol created, and needs disks to do so. At this stage - it will write the new configuration to disk should I create it. I don't want to do this -
Before I reinstall all the drives, can the system recover from this? I really don't wish to lose the data I have.

That might appear to work, but it doesn't. The NAS boots from the hard drives, and the OS reinstall requires the hard drives to be installed.
So you didn't actually reset anything. Right now you are in a recovery mode, but without disks that mode won't let you do anything.
What you need to do is power down the NAS, and reinsert the drives. I suggest booting up normally first, and then looking at the status with RAIDar before trying the password reset. https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar
There is also a facility to download the ReadyNAS logs and run diagnostics on the NAS in RAIDar. I suggest doing both of those things.
If you didn't forget the Admin password, then the OS reinstall is unlikely restore your access. It's best to figure what's going on with the NAS before trying that step. Likely something is seriously wrong.
But if you do decide to try it anyway, you do it with disks installed, using the procedure on pages 74-75 here: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNAS_%20OS6_Desktop_HM_EN.pdf In addition to resetting the admin password back to password, it will reset the network configuration to the default DHCP with no bonding, and turn off the volume quota (which can be re-enabled via the volume settings wheel).

Taking your suggestion, I have re-installed drives and booted. My first task was to test the login from ttyl - local console - and I don't recall
being able to sign in,
I also checked being able to sign into the GUI, and was able to do so - from LInux. It occured to me that I ran into a similar issue some time back and discovered that a Windows update was causing issues with the password on the share vol. (at that time) Uninstalling the update resolved it, until the next time it installed.
Working from Linux and the NFS share vol, I've not had issue. My concern at first was that the unit had be compromised and the passwords changed / ransomware'd.
While I am changing password and reviewing the logs now, I suspect it is okay - which is a good time. Sounds like a great time to make a triple backup.

Perhaps the PC credential for the NAS got changed somehow. So maybe take a look at that (or just delete the credential and create a new one).
