ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Email alerts not working and I'm unable to reconfigure. Logs show something like "smtp server cannot be reached".

Our email is quite simple.... smtp.*****.com port 587 no encryption.  Fails when I try to reconfigure using a outlook.com email account as well (pop enabled).

Normally port 587 uses SSL encryption (though technically it is supposed to be an option).

Are you able to access the internet generally from the NAS?  One way to check is to try "check for updates", and see if you get an error reaching the update server.

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

From Network Solutions: (our email provider)

Note - Substitute your actual domain name for "yourdomain.com" and substitute the first part of your email address for "user."

  • Username = user@yourdomain.com
  • Password = the password you set up when you configured your mail box
  • Incoming Mail Server = mail.yourdomain.com
  • Outgoing Mail Server = smtp.yourdomain.com
    • Outgoing Server Requires Authentication (typically found in advanced options or settings)
    • Do NOT check "Log on Using Secure Password Authentication"
    • Use the same Username and Password as Incoming or select "Use Same Settings as Incoming"
  • Outgoing Server Port = 2525 or 587
    • This is subject to change based on the individual preferences of your ISP

Note - Make sure you are not chosing and SSL type, this option should be turned off, or "None" should be selected.

I'll try port 2525 a bit later and see what happens.

BTW.... no error on "check for updates"

Port 2525 doesn't work either.  I did get an error code, though 5008010002. I suppose that's progress.

I attempted to set it up with an outlook.com account using the standard settings provided - FAIL

I attempted to set it up with my "secret" smtp settings for outlook.com - FAIL

I tried various ports 25, 587, 2525 all failed.

This was working fine before the update. What happenend?

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Hello sfpegasus,

Can you try entering a different email address with a different domain like gmail.com? See if that works so we'll know if the email alert works on other email domain or not.

Regards,

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Thanks for the help, Jenn:

gmail.com = unable to send test message

outlook.com = unable to send a test message

ourdomain.com = unable to send a test message

Here's an excerpt from the msmtp log when the problem started. Why does my log stop on December 16?  It would be nice to know what the results of these trials were.

Dec 11 21:00:03 host=smtp.xxxxxxx.com tls=off auth=on user=webmaster@xxxxxxx.com from=ReadyNAS@xxxxxxx.com recipients=webmaster@xxxxxxx.com mailsize=271 smtpstatus=250 smtpmsg='250 ok 1449896346 qp 30046' exitcode=EX_OK

Dec 14 06:02:34 host=smtp.pjruane.com tls=off auth=on user=webmaster@xxxxxxx.com from=ReadyNAS@xxxxxxx.com recipients=webmaster@xxxxxxx.com errormsg='cannot locate host smtp.xxxxxxx.com: Name or service not known' exitcode=EX_NOHOST

Note that with gmail you also need to make some configuration changes in your google account - disabling two-factor authentication, and enabling access from "less secure apps".

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Two-factor was already disabled so I enabled "less secure apps"

Waited two hours to make sure it would take.  FAIL.

I'm considering downgrading to 6.4.0. I can't decipher it all, but I see some odd stuff in the logs and it all seems to correspond to the date I updated the OS.

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Ok, something else is going on here.

I downgraded to 6.4.0.  The first thing I noticed was a big red X SMTP_NOT_CONFIGURED.  Not sure what that meant so I tried both ourdomain.com and outlook.com.  Both failed.

For kicks and giggles, I "checked for updates" to see what would happen.  I expected that I would be offered 6.4.1 but nothing happened.  Is there a chance this device is not connected even to the internet? How do I check?

After clearing the cache the red X and SMTP_NOT_CONFIGURED is gone and a different interface has appeared.  No luck getting configured, though.

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Ok, who would have thought it was the ROUTER?  Unbelievable.  The ReadyNAS is on its own port on a 4-port Comcast Business Gateway (NetGear) because I had previous problems via a switch. All the other workstations are on different port via a switch.  For whatever reason the ReadyNAS port was not connecting to the internet, yet all the others were.

First thing I got was a notice that an upgrade was available which tells me it was never connecting to the internet.

Problem solved.

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

I should have left well enough alone.  Upgraded to 6.4.1 again...

1) email settings completely gone

2) entered email settings and FAIL again

3) got clever and thought going back to 6.4.0 would fix it.... NOT

Can't get to the router right now so I'll have to wait on that.

What in this upgrade could possibly mess with my router?  Is that possible?

When I can get to the router I will try:

1) change the ReadyNas from port 3 to port 4 to rule out a port problem

2) reboot the router again and see if ReadyNAS can see the internet

Re: ReadyNAS 312 no email alerts after 6.4.1 upgrade

Changing the port had no effect.

Rebooting the router got everything to work.

Still running 6.4.0 and it shut down on schedule, woke up on schedule and remained connected to the internet.

Next step.  Upgrade to 6.4.1 again and see if we can maintain connectivity.
