ReadyNAS Duo v1 Win 7 user accounts on NAS help

Hi All

I have been using my ReadyNAS for a couple of years and have all my user files on there like My Documents, My Music etc, Desktop files. I am running Windows 7. However I have just got a new PC to replace the old win 7 one but cannot for the life of me work out how I told Windows where all the user files are.

I have asked Mr Google and there was a complicated explaination using RegEdit but before I am sure I just right clicked somewhere and told it the new paths... All the data is on the NAS and so I just want to tell windows thats where to access everything for my User account.

We are a family user and have just one account for us all.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all
C

I'd like a little more clarification. With your old PC, when you clicked on "Documents" were you seeing the files on the NAS?

It is possible to set Windows up that way, though I think most people would map drives or put shortcuts on the desktop instead.

Anyway, a little more details on where you want the NAS folders to show up would be helpful.
  • thanks for the reply.....

what i want is when i click on my documents it is the my documents on my share on the NAS for Users/Me so they are all there. I was certain you could tell Windows where My Docs, My Pics are located etc but I cannot find it.

    Thanks

Here's a procedure that should do what you want (using the Music library as an example).

    1. Create a base folder on your hard drive for shares you want in a library i.e. c:\share
    2. Create another folder in the above share. i.e. c:\share\music
    3. Link an existing library to this folder. i.e Right-click on the Music library, select properties and choose "include a folder" Enter c:\share\music
    4. Delete the folder i.e. c:\share\music
    5. Use mklink in an elevated command prompt to make a symbolic link in c:\share that matches the original folder name. I.e. right-click on CMD and run it as administrator. Enter mklink /d c:\share\music \\NASNAME\music on the command line
  • thanks!

As I have you attention... do not suppose you know a good cheap (i.e. not vault) on line backup service? I looked at Crashplan but the work around was beyond me for NAS files.

I use Crashplan, but that is not an option for a duo v1 (since the v1 doesn't support Java).

There are some other sites that offer inexpensive unlimited storage with FTP support. justhost.com is one (though technically using it for backup is not really in the terms of service). http://www.onlinestoragesolution.com is another. I haven't used them. I don't think you should depend on any of these inexpensive cloud storage providers for your primary backup, though I think they do make sense for secondary backup/disaster recovery (if you have a fast enough internet uplink).
  • Thanks. No I have a couple of USB 3.0 1tb hard drives I use. This was just a fail safe.

Thanks I will take a look.
