ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Review (RNDU6000) no network activity???
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Review (RNDU6000) that I suddenly couldn't access through my computer last night. The NAS is in my network and is my storage of miscellaneous. It's in a kind of raid...

I recommend increasing the RAM before you begin. Shipping OS-6 NAS have at least 2 GB of RAM, your ReadyNAS only has 1 GB. It might work, but there have been folks who have run into out-of-memory issues after converting. The upgrade is inexpensive, and is simple to do. If you aren't sure what to purchase, you can open the chassis and examine the RAM that's already installed in order to find something compatible.
Also, if you have the skills, you should probably back up the VPD before conversion. Netgear Mods so far have resolved the VPD problem for users who have run into it, but backing it up would allow you to resolve the issue on your own if you run into it. More information on this is here:
The conversion steps are:
(Optionally) make sure the latest BIOS is installed before you do the conversion. To do this you install http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin as an add-on and reboot the NAS. Do this after you backup the NAS. This isn't necessary, but if you do want to update the BIOS it is easiest to do it prior to conversion
Basic instructions for the conversion itself are
- BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP
- Upload PREPR4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin as an add-on using the ReadyNAS web gui, but do not reboot afterwards (avoids the need to do manual factory resets)
- Upload R4toR6_6.9.5.bin using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
- After you upload the addon+firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default.
- Go through the setup process on the converted NAS
- Update the NAS to the current OS 6 (check for updates will work).
- Restore files from the backup.
There is a small risk that the process could fail, and if that were to happen it might not be possible to get the NAS running again.
Note that if you ever need to do a USB recovery later on, you will need to use the procedure for 4.2 systems - substituting an OS-6 image for the 4.2.31 one.

How simple backing up the VPD file is depends on your level of experience and comfort with the Linux command line. Read the instructions in the post StephenB pointed to and make that determination for yourself.

I want to thank you all for the help. I couldn't have done it without that help. I need to think carefully about what I'm going to do next. At the moment I find it tricky to bring this NAS to OS 6. Although I find the process of doing it very interesting and fun. In the meantime I have a new disk in the NAS and it is back as it was. Maybe I'll buy a whole new NAS. One of these times with the specs of this time.

Okay, here I am again. It took some time to get the memmory banks but they are inside now. I have 2GB memmory. What should I do first?

Making sure the backup is complete is the first step. Since the conversion process can corrupt the VPD (never has for me, and I've converted a lot of units, but there have been reports here), then backing up the VPD is the best next step. Then, the actual conversion. The steps that take a significant amount of time are the backup, sync of the OS6 volume, and restoration of files.

Okay, first to get that VPD file. I hope I can get it off the NAS.

Sandshark posted instructions for that here:

I can not log in via putty?
- Andreas64nlFeb 12, 2023Aspirant
I have trubbles to get in support tech. The manual is not correct. They say to hold the reset button in and than with the backup button too scroll but that does not work. When I release the reset button I can scroll but any other button I put in nothing happens.
Okay I am in Techsupport and get an IP but can not get in via putty?
- SandsharkFeb 12, 2023Sensei
"Can't get in" is not much of a description. Don't connect at all, or the credentials are refused?
In Tech Support mode, you use Telnet, not SSH. Putty can do that, but if you are used to using SSH, that will be the default. You also have to use user name root and password infr8ntdebug. If those don't help, then you need to be more specific in your description of the problem.

I did what is in the manual. Via putty with telnet but no connection.
I tried to boot the NAS again but it is not booting any more. So, I dont know what happend??? Only seeing READY NAS. And RAIDar can not find the NAS either. Even without disks it is not booting.
- SandsharkFeb 12, 2023Sensei
Sadly, this is sounding more and more like a hardware issue and you just got lucky when it booted a few times. Are you back to seeing no Ethernet activity? Try turning it off for an extended period and re-boot.
- Andreas64nlFeb 12, 2023Aspirant
No network activity indeed. Could it be that the NAS is initializing the disks some how? Or because off the 2 new memory banks?
- SandsharkFeb 13, 2023Sensei
Did you ever get it to boot past "ReadyNAS" on the display with the new memory? If not, it could be either the memory itself or something that came loose when you added it. It's not the drives initializing. Even though access can be a bit slow, your NAS is still accessible during volume initialization.
- Andreas64nlFeb 13, 2023Aspirant
With the new memory banks it was just working fine. Boot a several times and it was accessible. After trying to get in support tech modus it was till working fine. Just when I was to try again and check Putty is via telnet and not SSH, I pushed twice for shutting down. After that is was not booting again. I tried also with the old memory bank but still the same. Not booting, no internet led`s and not accessible. So it is not booting. With disks or without disks. With new memory or old memory.

And the display just says "ReadyNAS"? Could be flash memory corruption, for which a USB recovery is the solution. Did you successfully back up the VPD file? Since USB recovery re-writes the flash where the VPD is located, corruption of it is possible (though it's supposed to be protected).
- Andreas64nlFeb 13, 2023Aspirant
Yes, only READYNAS and fans full blowing. And green led above backp button on.
- SandsharkFeb 13, 2023Sensei
The display will show "ReadyNAS" with nothing present except 5V, so there are many possibilities.
Sounds like time to try USB recovery. You never got to the point of installing OS6, right? So, a standard OS4.2.31 recovery is called for. It could be the power supply or something else (lots of re-booting can stress an old PSU and other components). If the USB recovery doesn't work, then further investigation is best performed by first installing a VGA cable and monitor onto the VGA header located on the motherboard and seeing if it's even getting through motherboard POST.
- Andreas64nlFeb 13, 2023Aspirant
Never installed OS6. https://kb.netgear.com/30267/RAIDiator-4-2-USB-Recovery-Tool never worked so far. I follow the rules and create a usb but it is not comming in recovery modus or any modus.
- SandsharkFeb 14, 2023Sensei
Legacy units are very picky about the USB drive you use, so you should try a couple more if you have them.
- Andreas64nlFeb 14, 2023AspirantOkay, I will try.
- Andreas64nlFeb 14, 2023Aspirant
Nothing happend. I tried 10 different usb sticks. I think it is realy dead this time.
- SandsharkFeb 14, 2023Sensei
Looking back through the thread, it does not appear you ever properly tried another power supply. A failing PSU was was one of my early suspicions. I've never tried to connect just the 24-pin connector, as you apparently did, I think you must also power the SATA backplane. I absolutely know that you cannot leave the original PSU connected to the backplane and expect it to work with a different supply on the 24-pin. If the ATX power supply you tried has no 4-pin Molex connectors, then you'll need some SATA to Molex adapters. With no drives installed, just for testing, you should only need to connect one of the three.
Then again, with your data now all backed up, you may want to take this as a sign it's time to move on to another NAS.

I already have another NAS. I have this one:
QNAP TS-h973AX, 32GB ram, Seagate IronWolf Pro schijven, 30TB
I have tried another powersupply but I can try again.
- Andreas64nlMar 11, 2023Aspirant
It took some time but I tried with another powersupply and it is the same. It is not booting at all. With or without disks. Anyone another tip?
- Andreas64nlMar 18, 2023Aspirant
Okay thank you all a lot for helping me out. The NAS is dead. So I will try to sell the memory banks en use the HD for extra back-up storage.
