Scheduled Backup With Overwrite
Hi
I searched for the forum but didn't find what I was looking for.
I wish to backup my desktop at regular intervals but I do not want to keep all the backups.
My desktop is synced with the NAS. - DONE
I want to schedule a DIFFERENT backup of the "NAS copy" of the desktop on atleast once a week - PROBLEM AREA
Now I want to keep a backup of only 2 months - PROBLEM AREA.
e.g
NAS ROOT \ SYNC \ DESKTOP
NAS ROOT\ back up \ desktop week 1
NAS ROOT\ back up \ desktop week 2
NAS ROOT\ back up \ desktop week 3
NAS ROOT\ back up \ desktop week 4
So after 2 weeks, desktop week 1 should be deleted.
I do not want to use cloud as internet is expensive in my country.
any pointers or softwares will be appreciated
Mitesh

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell you could get backup software for your PC that will do this.
What version of RAIDiator are you running? - xeltrosApprenticeYou seem to have a duo v2, I don't know the OS on it, what I can tell you is that this should be possible to do via some SSH scripting, although it depends on how your backups are kept. If this is a sparse bundle like for time machine this would be a problem, if this is a directory/subdirectory architecture like you seem to suggest, you should be able to get through with a script.
Have you searched for backup software ? I believe that Norton and Acronis products are able to do that (check with them). There are probably other manufacturers out there but I'm please with Time Machine and rsync for my backup needs so...
If you find a product that fits your needs it could be better than SSH, otherwise I'll try to find you the command. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAcronis can certainly do this, though its backups are all to the same folder (each in separate TIB files).
I have it set up to create a clean backup every 8 weeks (deleting prior copies), and then do incremental backups until the next 8 week period. There are lots of other ways to set it up.
With frontview backup, you can set up a chain of backups that would also do what you want as well.
Every Monday, copy backup-3 to backup-4
Every Tuesday copy backup-2 to backup-3
Every Wednesday copy backup-1 to backup-2
Every Thursday run a new PC backup to backup-1.
This would take a lot more space than Acronis of course. - mitumixAspirantHi Guys
Thanks for the suggestions.
Issues : Buying a software is out of question unless it is free. The problem is functionality is not provided by the GUI nor additional apps. SSH is ok but it will run off a PC. Can SSH run inside the NAS? I think there should be an Advanced Tab for these sort of activities and best practices templates.
I have decided to use the built in feature, where after 4 weeks(which is the max) it will do a FULL BACKUP and do a delete lot of existing files. Which means, the daily backups will be incremental.
FYI Firmware: RAIDiator 5.3.7
Right now, my issue is active sync with desktop and nas as windows 7 offlines and sync center turns out to be unreliable. :( THis I have posted as a new thread. - xeltrosApprenticeI think there is an addon called "enable root SSH" that would let you SSH into the NAS. See viewtopic.php?f=36&t=61536
You may also want to know that Netgear can deny support if SSH is enabled. Not sure if your unit is still under warranty though.
I don't know about windows sync, I always used third party software (paid) for that. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAll v2 nas would be under warranty at the moment, since they were released less than 3 years ago.
enablerootssh is available for the v2 here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... UybQ%3D%3D
