Seagate Error codes
Two of my drives in my 104 are having problems. One that died I checked with SeaTools, and it failed to run the tests and cameback with an error code E161CB4A. Anyone know what this means? A search...
Seagate has a pretty efficient RMA process, though they will free free to substitute a different drive model that they feel is equivalent (or better). I have sometimes been able to resolve this by calling them and talking through options if I disagreed. Though it does require another return cycle, they will pay the shipping on the second round.
For US customers, the option where they pre-pay the return will get you the replacement much more quickly, and (in my experience) it costs about the same as paying the shipping yourself.
Though I haven't done enough returns to have a valid sample size, generally I've found that RMA'd drives don't seem to last as long as drives I purchased new. Once I noticed that, I decided not to put any RMA returns back into the NAS - instead I put them in other systems that I don't view as critical.
Personally if I were buying a seagate I'd have gone with the ST4000VN000.
