Transcoding audio files on NV+v2

I have been trying to use Minimserver/Minimstreamer to transcode stereo audio files on my NV+v2 and stream to my audio players.

There has been a drop-out problem with transcoding of 24bit and high sample rate files, particularly 24/88 and 24/192 FLAC files. The dropouts always occur at the same point in each file, i.e. the problem replicates faithfully every time.

We have now traced the problem back to, apparently, the CPU in the NV+v2. The transcoding task is often running well above 70% of the CPU and the dropouts are occurring when that task is requesting over 97% of the CPU.

There are no other tasks on the ReadyNAS absorbing any significant CPU. The dropouts always occur at the same point in the files.

The same files have also been tested on a Duo v2 and transcoding is running fine at c. 20% of the CPU. As I thought the two machines are essentially using the same processor it sounds like there might be a configuration problem or something with mine.

I was running RAIDiator 5.3.9 and have upgraded to 5.3.10 after reading the performance notes here. No difference.

I'd much appreciate thoughts and advice on how to fix this.

Other information - NAS connects to a GS108 switch. The GS108 connects to the audio player (at 100Mb rather than gigabit, but that's a limitation of the player). No other identified performance issues with the ReadyNAS, e.g. file transfer speeds are very satisfactory in both directions.

Yes, both have the same CPU.

You really should be using a NAS with an Intel CPU for what you want to do e.g. the RN312 or RN314.

Are there any differences in services enabled or add-ons running on the two machines?

Have you ever expanded the volume on the NV+ v2?

What is the CPU usage like on each NAS when not using Minimserver/Minimstreamer?
  • Thanks for the reply - appreciated.

I don't think there are any notable differences in services. However the Duo v2 is not mine and I can't go check it right now.

I have expanded the volume. About six months ago I added a fourth drive (four x 2Tb drives, all same model).

CPU usage on NV+v2 is minimal when not actively streaming (but with MinimServer/MinimStreamer enabled. Typically 3% with occasional blips to 15-20%.

It has been suggested I might have an out of date or corrupt Java version, so I'm going to try and update that.

EDIT - PROBLEM NOW SOLVED. Turned out the problem was with the Java version I had installed. I updated to Version 7 and the problem has now gone away.
