Windows Security credentials to connect to ReadyNAS Duo

Used to access the NAS by the Hostname I gave to it. It used to ask me sometimes (if I didn't tick the 'remember my credentials') to put login details, name and password - BUT it's not a network password, just a login details, not sure why.
Don't know why and Netgear support could not help either when that came up on the beginning.
So have been living like that for sometime.

Last week I cleared my Network Passwords on my Win7 Pro laptop. Since then the NAS login window comes on (looks just like the windows network login, but it shows my windows account picture).

have put the same login details as before, but now doesn't work anymore.

I've managed to login to it through the IP address (\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. ) and it works fine.

BUT the question now is, why can I not login with the NAS Hostname set under the 'Global Settings' on the NAS ?

This is upsetting because I used to synchronize with it no problems and now have to re-start the synchronization. If someone has an idea, please, that would help. Thank you.

You set up the Windows Login to the NAS through the Windows Credential Manager in the control panel.

So try entering the NAS hostname there, with the appropriate user name and password.
  • We typically need to enter a Windows Credential with the name of the PC as the user, and no password. But I don't have users and groups set up. So for a computer named SHIPPING, on that computer, I enter a credential with user of SHIPPING and no password. Works easily.

If that is the case, any user name that doesn't exist on the NAS will work (that is, you could use "doesntexist" as the user name on all the PCs and get the same result).
  • I've had a case where the computer hostname changed and access to the NAS was broken until I entered a new Windows credential. This specific method has been mentioned on the forums before by others.

I've seen several postings saying that there are issues if the computer hostname matches one of the share names. I'm not sure if changing the login credential helps that or not (since the hostname is still the same). I've never seen this particular problem, though I do have a couple of shares that match computer host names in my Pro.

On the username, it should only matter if it is known by the Nas. For instance, "admin" is problematic. On some windows systems, even if you enter the admin credential into the credentials manager, Windows will still not always supply the right password if the Windows logon is also admin. I have that issue with a Vista machine. Every time I restart the desktop, I need to enter the admin password for the NAS the first time I access it. After that, it is ok (until the next restart).

You can also get into trouble if you have a public share with the same name as a user (who has a private share on the NAS). The problem there is that the public and private shares have a name conflict.
