streaming media to iphone from readyNAS NV+ (it works!)
ok, ever since I got this iphone a few month's ago I have been looking for a nice way to access the music, pictures and maybe even video I store on my readyNAS NV+.
I tried crossfire, but it never seemed to work? viewtopic.php?f=36&t=31937
I tried accessing slimserver directly but that would only let me control my squeezebox, not play anything on the phone.
Tried ipeng but that never worked either. I think it is also just a remote for slimserver devices.
finally, I sprang for a $5.00 app named PlugPlayer for iphone which did the trick.
the available version did not work (2.3.xx), but the dev was nice enough to hook me up with a beta of 2.4.0.
I can now look at pictures, play music, (I haven't any iphone compatible video) over Edge, 3G and wireless connections anywhere. In my small test (my morning commute) I did not have any drop outs or issues.
This worked with:
readyNAS NV+ with readyDLNA turned on
readyNAS port 8200 forwarded, dyndns setup to handle Comcast dynamic ip
Comcast connection with 15Mbps down 3Mbps up
iphone 3GS
if anyone has another solution I would like to hear it, this seemed to be the easiest/cheapest way to go.

- metafusionAspirantHey Mkopel, read your interesting post about the PlugPlayer app was just wondering what it took to set up? Did you only have to enter the URL of your ReadyNAS? I am having problems understanding what is meant with the "Device URL - Device description XML file". Can you point me in the right direction. Thanks!
- mkopelAspirant2 things:
1. if you are on the same sub-net as the readyNAS with your iphone, it should just find it. make sure readyDLNA is running on the NAS.
2. if you don't have version 2.4.0, it won't work from outside your local network. the dev gave me a beta to give it a try. Perhaps you can write him to get on the beta as well. with 2.4.0 it finds the readyNAS on the local network, and for outside my LAN I had to add http://[dyndns name of readyNAS]:8200 as the Base URL. I also increased the timeout to 15 seconds to help with 3G and edge.
Device URL - Device Description XML file, is the path to the xml file that describes the Media Server. with the readyNAS it is something like http://[ip of your nas]:8200/rootDesc.xml
good luck and let me know how it goes. - metafusionAspirantHey, thanks for the quick answer. Got everything running, just don't have the 2.4.0 version yet. Will get in touch with the dev and ask for that beta. Thanks again.
- mkopelAspirantsweet, glad to help.
- ghermanAspirantDid you get it to work using WiFi or outside of the local network?
What exactly did you put in the Device URL? I get an error that says something about not be able to load XML description file. I even checked out that I had the correct URL by trying it on Safari on my cell phone. Any ideas? - metafusionAspirantI have it working on WiFi. Outside is not possible with he current version. Starting with version 2.4 an outside connection will be available.
- ghermanAspirantI checked to see if my ReadyNAS was visible over the internet by loading the description XML file from a browser (http://<dyndns url>:8200/rootDesc.xml). It worked fine on my Mac using firefox and on Safari on my iPhone. When I enter it into Device URL in PlugPlayer is get an error that it can't read a XML file from that address. What am I doing wrong?
- metafusionAspirantYou are not doing anything wrong. The current version of PlugPlayer is not able to reach your ReadyNAS via remote. You'll have to wait for the next release, which is 2.4.0.
mkopel is running this version, as he was lucky enough to receive the Beta 2.4 from the developer. Everyone else, including you and me, will just have to wait. - ghermanAspirantI didn't think that this was the problem. A number of people seemed to get past this point and receive the error ""Audio Error Attempt to play streaming audio failed". I just wanted to get to that error and wait until 2.4 arrived.
