ReadyNAS Ultra Plus 2 volume consistency check error

For some time now I get 2 errors, a volume consistency check and error on backup. Everything says NAS is healthy. Rebooted with volume scan check box, no error. I can access files and backup data looks good. I can download full logs. I ran manufacturer tests on backup drive and it was error free. Where in logs can I get some insight into what is going on? Thanks in advance

The scrub and volume consistency issues are on the data volume.

Did you check the disk health on the internal drives - looking at the SMART stats shown in the web ui? Pending sectors, reallocated sectors, and unrecoverable errors are the most critical areas to look at (followed by ATA errors).

It's possible that the file system consistency problem is causing the backup failure. If you have a PC that is connected via gigabit ethernet to the network, you might want to try connecting the USB disk to the PC and copying files to it from the PC - that might give you more information on what is failing.  On a windows system, you might want to try teracopy - it has a verify option that might be helpful.

Ultimately, you might need to skip some files, getting the ones you can get off the NAS.

On the web ui disks are "healthy". Clicking on smart+ displays new dialog box but nothing in it. Probably better to look at the logs?

If you see a blank pop-up, you should try a different browser.  IE generally works well with the old NAS.

The details in the SMART log look ok to me.  FWIW, when the time comes to replace these drives, I'd recommend going with a NAS-purposed drive (WDC Red or Seagate Ironwolf).

You could also look through the logs (system and kernel) for disk i/o errors.  That might tell us something.

Assuming not - the net here is

        • the drives appear healthy
        • the volume has issues (scrub fails and file system checks fail)
        • the backup job fails to copy everything

One option is to use paid Netgear support (my.netgear.com).  Though I am thinking that in the end you will need to do a factory reset anyway.

So I think you need to manually copy everything you can (which I suspect will be almost everything).

Then do a factory reset, and and after the raid sync completes, try reconfiguring the NAS and restoring the data.
