Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

Hello, I'm not sure if this reply is in the correct spot but after searching for a solution myself I read many of the comments here I also have had problems over the last few days since upgrading the Firmware to 6.4.1 on my NAS RN202 - I wasn't sure if was a Windows (10) update that caused it or something else but everything changed and my NAS202 stopped showing up under 'Network' - I was able to improve this by moving some files and folders into different directories as it seemed that the more files the unit had to refresh (or what ever the NAS does) the more often it couldn't find things, I also found that some of my permissions seemed different (always take a screenshot of what works) but the REAL kicker was when I discovered that under Accounts >> Authentication >> Workgroup Name: this had somehow become VOLUME... I would never have called it this opting for the more obvious choice of WORKGROUP... once I changed this everything started working correctly again including on my Laptop connect wirelessly to the network. Might be something to check 🙂

The workgroup is set correctly?

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

Yep, just double checked. It is "OURHOME" on all my PCs and

workgroup = OURHOME

appears in mysmb.conf

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

PCs have been rebooted?
You can access the shares?

Everything in the same subnet?

Only one subnet, rebooted all machines. I can access the shares just fine.

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

I have an RN102 with 6.2.0 that doesn't show up under Network in Windows Explorer. If I go to map a network drive, and enter the path to the share manually, that works though. I originally had it set up with 6.1.9 and it showed up as expected, but then I put two new disks which went to 6.2.0 as it set up.

Same here. It was working like a champ on 6.1.9

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

That is working for me. The RN102 shows up under "Computer", "media device" and "storage".

Overall, showing up in "network" seems to be hit or miss with Windows, so this might not be a regression in 6.2. There is a direct workaround - just set up a windows shortcut on the desktop.

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

What do you mean by 'The RN102 shows up under "Computer", "media device" and "storage".'? I was only talking about the Network browser

And I agree, Samba is such a tricky thing to get configured properly. Was it update in 6.2.0?

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

In advanced sharing settings in network and sharing center, is network discovery on?
Perhaps turn it off and then on again and refresh the network places screen.
It works on my windows 7 pc, before and after upgrading to 6.2.0

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

Yea, tried that. Made sure I am on a private network, turned discovery on and off. Behaves same way on my 2 windows 8.1 machines and my one windows 7 machine.

I am not sure what you mean by "Network Browser"

I was talking about Windows Explorer. When I click on "Network" in the left pane in Windows Explorer, I see several categories of devices = all of which are populated:
(a) Computer
(b) Media Devices
(c) Multifunction Devices
(d) Network Infrastructure
(e) Other devices
(f) Printers
(g) Scanners
(h) Storage
(i) Home Automation

My RN102 is listed 3 times - once in (a), again in (b) and a third time in (h). It shows up in (b) because of Plex btw.

This is on my Windows 7 laptop.

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

Yea, that's the "network browser". Mine doesn't show up anywhere.

Waiting to restore files before I get my apps (plex and a couple of others) installed.

Easy to work around, but different behavior for me with 6.2.0. Would like to be able to figure it out. I am nearly positive it is just some samba configuration thingie and now a client side thingie.

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

This issue comes up fairly frequently with all flavors of ReadyNAS (not just OS6). Windows network discovery seems a bit off - sometimes devices disappear, and then reappear when I do a refresh.

I've never seen a clear statement on the root cause, or seen a fix. The two obvious workarounds are shortcuts on the desktop and permanently mapped drive letters. You could also add a network location under "Computer" - which is similar to a mapped drive, but has no drive letter. If you right-click on "computer" you should see "add a network location".

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

I want to jump in on this as I just noticed the same problem with both my OS6 NAS's ...

After updating both my RN102 and RN516 to OS6.2, I noticed that both NAS's no longer appear on "NETWORK" via my WIN7 PC.
My ReadyNAS PR0 6350 still appears as before.

If I search via the IP address of each NAS, I can access them.

Because both the RN102 and RN516 were "FACTORY RESET" recently, I thought it might have something to do with Settings on the NAS.
I have SMB, NFS, RSync, UPnP, HTTP, HTTPS, and AntiVirus activated.

It seems strange the WIN7 would suddenly develop this issue after the upgrade from 6.19 to 6.20.

Any suggestions?

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

This issue surfaces regularly (and posts on it predate OS6). I've also noticed on my own systems that refreshing the network list on Windows sometimes results in devices disappearing (or reappearing).

I know of no fix.

Re: windows not showing ReadyNAS name in network

Interesting. I did a factory reset on mine as well. Planning on reinstalling of sometime soon will see if that clears things up.

Seems like it would be good for it to be master browser since it is on 24/7 and my other computers are not.

Yea, SMB is a bit of black magic, no idea how it ever works. Though it appeared to work in 6.1.9
