FVS318N refuses to connect to comcast modem

My office has a comcast modem (Docsis 3 that was just upgraded from a Docsis 2 as part of the trouble shooting steps) with 5 static IP address assigned. Recently we have been having problem after problem. A few weeks ago the old Netgear FVS318G just wouldn't work. Tried everything and just figured that it died, so purchased the FVS318N. Well, it refuses to connect to the modem. I can connect a basic D-Link router to the modem and it workes fine with the assigned IP that I give it. I can connect my laptop direct to the modem and give it the same IP address and it works fine. I connect the FVS318N, assign the static IP address that I want it to have and it just will not connect to the internet. When I look at the broadband connectiuon status it looks like it's connected to the outside but won't pass traffic. The device is new out of the box and I haven't configured anything else other than the IP address (and DHCP which is already enabled). I've tried cloning the MAc address of my laptop to the FVS318n and that doesn't work either. I've contacted Comcast multiple times and they've tried everything they can and nothing seems to work. The modem is in bridge mode and has no ports blocked on it.

Another strange thing is that I also as a Cisco ASA5505 connected to the modem with another IP address connected to another seperate internal network that seems to have the same issue. It almost seems like there is some issue with Comcast, but they say that it can't been them. Here is the basics of my network:

MODEM (5 Static IP Addresses, only 4 in use)

Port 1 - IP#1: Modem ->FVS318N->Unmanaged Switch->multiple desktops, printers, etc

Port 2 - IP#2: Modem ->Server 2012 Beta working as a webserver with no issues

Port 3 - IP#3: Modem->Cisco ASA5505->Unmanaged Switch->Server 2003 Machine, other desktops and printers
**I replaced the ASA5505 with a Netgear home wireless router and it works fine now

I would appriciate any suggestions or thoughts that anyone might have, I'm not a networks engineer just know the basics....this has me so flustered. Thanks everyone!!

    modem is smc modem/gateway and port 1,2,3 here is lan ports of the smc modem/gateway and rest of two is also DHCP client like fvs318N correct?
  • Yes, the modem is. 4 port smc/smb, not sure what the name it correctly. MODEM has (5 Static IP Addresses assigned but only 4 in use)

    Modem Port 1 - IP#1 ->FVS318N->Unmanaged Switch->multiple desktops, printers, etc

    Modem port 4 - ip#4 ->direct to Windows 2008 Machine serving web traffic

    Stuff connected to each port is it own small network of device/devices. And they don't cross over. My biggest concern is that the FVs318n refuses to connect. Told modem is in bridge mode so that it just passes traffic through to my network
  • I guess #2,3,4 is working huh...

    Not sure what FVS318N is refusing with mac spoofing

    if you place fvs318 behind the #4's router can you get some private IP on WAN?
  • The modem from the cable internet provider has 4 ports on it which I listed before, each of those ports I have something plugged into it. I have 2 stand-alone machines that each have an IP address assigned to them (one of the 5 static IP addresses that is provided by the internet provider Comcast) and they work fine. The other 2 ports I have firewall devices plugged in and have been attempting to assign them static IP addresses also but I cannot get either of the devices to see the modem even though they are directly plugged in to one of the ports. As I said, the FVS318n is brand new and has not been configured to block anything. Just plugging it in and setting an IP address should work but it refuses. I have tried spoofing the MAC address of the device to be the same MAC address of my laptop which will work when I pulg it in direct to the modem and assign it the smae IP address that I'm trying to use. I've talked to Comcast and Netgear several times and NO ONE has any solutions to add. Just hoping maybe someone has a glimmer of hope for me.
  • Well, for whatever reason unknown to me.....I plugged everything in, reset again. Enetered all the same information as before and a few minutes later everything just started working. Have no idea why it wouldn't work before.
  • Sometime you keep trying back and forth can result of not working
    Walk away for hour ,two and try again can help ..
