A6210 Network Adapter name changed after Windows 10 Anniversary Update - Genie App wont open

After installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the Genie App will not open. Device manager shows that the name of the adapter has been changed to "801.11ac Wireless LAN Card". Tried several things: (1) reinstalling the software, (2) updating the software driver, (3) manually assigning the driver. In every case, I can see the installation software assigning the correct name (i.e., NETGEAR A6210 WiFi USB3.0 Adapter)  to the adapater, and then Windows 10 seems to instantly change it back to the above reference. This seems to cause the Genie software to not recognize or find the adapter, and thereby it doesn't open or fully run.  By default, Windows 10 now assigns a Media Tek driver.  Both the windows 10 supplied driver and manually assigning the lastest Netgear driver (v1.0.0.34) work fine. In either case, Genie app will not recognize the adapter. in either case In can use 2.4 and 5.0 Mhz networks. I've tried disabling the Windows 10 Advanced Systems hardware settings to prevent windows from auto assigning a default, still to no avail. In all cases, I've made sure the usb adapter is NOT plugged in when removing and installing the software. THIS ONLY OCCURED AFTER THE WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY UPDATE.

    Hi Windows_10_User,

Can you disable antivirus or firewall of your computer and uninstall/reinstall the driver.

I have the same problem, but not have not installed the anniversary update yet.  This occurred after Netgear sent a message tonight asking me if I wanted to install the 1.0.0.35 driver update. I am on Windows10 build: 10.0.14393

I've spent 2 hours dorking with this when I really needed to be in bed to be at the office early for a meeting.

The new driver does not recognize the adapter and I can no longer access the 5.4 MGHZ band on my router nor can I access the Genie configuration software.

I also see the funny name change happening in the device manager as I try to set this up, it changes from the Netgear name to a genereric 802.11 network adapter. and even after going into properties and forcing the "MaxUSB Speed" to be USB 3.0, it still does not recognize the adapter's higher speed, nor the genie software.

So I uninstalled the new driver, went back to install the oldest driver I could find that supported Win 10 (1.0.0.32) and that still does not work.

I am seriously unhappy that I've had use of this device for less than a year and is rendered useless by a simple driver upgrade.  And I can no longer access my High speed internet band on my dual band router.

  • I have a similar problem :
I have had the adapter for almost a year without problems, then recently after installing a recent Windows 10 Update, I noticed that the Genie App will not open.

Device manager shows that the name of the adapter has been changed to "801.11ac Wireless LAN Card".

    Tried several things:

    (1) reinstalling the software,
    (2) updating and deleting the software driver,
    (3) manually assigning the driver.

By default, Windows 10 Device Manager now assigns a Media Tek driver - "801.11ac Wireless LAN Card".

I am still able to connect to the 2.4GHz using the windows wifi app but Genie app will not recognize the adapter. I am unable to use the 5.0 Mhz networks. I have installed Netgear Genie 2.4.32 but still can't conncet to 5GHz.

I've tried disabling the Windows 10 Advanced Systems hardware settings to prevent windows from auto assigning a default, and withtthe Antivirus off but still to no avail.

In all cases, I've made sure the usb adapter is NOT plugged in when removing and installing the software.

THIS ONLY OCCURED AFTER THE WINDOWS 10 UPDATE.

I have the same exact issue as described by Windows10_ user above.  The device worked fine until the windows 10 upadate.  I am using the same anti-virus software as when I loaded the drivers and software the first time when running windows 7 pro and no issues then.
