C3700 5G band works at 200mbs but not 433mbps

Using EX3700 as an access point connected by ethernet to C3700 modem/router.

The EX3700 5g band seems to work if I set the EX3700 to 200mbs but not at 433mbs.  At the higher speed, it usually dpesn't show up as broadcasting at all on that band.  If it does and I connect to it, I cannot get through to the Internet.  What do these speeds mean?  Why is there a difference?

My C3700 does not offer a 433mbs speed.  It offers 200mbs and 300mbs.  The EX3700 offers 200mbs and 433mbs.  But the 433mbs doesn't work.  Can someone explain this to me?

By the way, I get the same results on an iPhone 6 and on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

I have the current update on the EX3700 but I don't think my ISP has put the current update on the C3700.  I doubt that has anything to do with my question, but my ISP, Cox, told me that it has all kinds of problems with the latest Netgear C3700 update.

Thanks, Darren.  Please let me know if you think I'm wrong, but I don't think your posting makes sense.  The EX3700 is connected to the C3700 by ethernet.  The EX3700 is configured as an access point.  I think the Wi-Fi speed of the C3700 is completely extraneous.  I only included that information because I'd like to know why 300mbs is not offered as an option on the EX3700.

The EX3700 supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi.  The 433 Mbps setting uses a modulation scheme (256-QAM) in conjunction with an 80 MHz wide channel.  The 200 Mbps setting uses the same modulation scheme except with a 40 MHz wide channel.  There is no 300 Mbps setting because there is no corresponding modulation scheme.

The C3700 supports 802.11n Wi-Fi.  300 Mbps uses 64-QAM with a 40 MHz channel.  AFAIK, there is no 200 Mbps setting.  It should be 145 Mbps (technically 144.4 Mbps).  This is 64-QAM with a 20 MHz channel.

Hello JayG2

What those speeds mean is how quickly data goes over your network so say you want to send a file or picture from 1 pc to another that are both in your house on the same network what that is saying is the file could be transferred at a rate up to 433 Mbs across your network. My guess is since your main router can only do up to 200 Mbs its telling the extender it can only do that as well.

I know this doesn't help but I have a similar problem with my model R7000 nighthawk router I believe?! I'm connected to the web via satellite through Hugh's Net but it's slower than dial-up?! I've called myself setting it up correctly online even using specified settings! Any ideas on that?!

Re: C3700 5G band works at 200mbs but not 433mbps

Thanks, The Ether.  I marked your reply as an answer.  But if it's knowable, I'd like to know why my EX3700 works at 200mbs but not very well at 433mbs.

I can't give you a definitive answer.  You could be in an area where there are a lot of 5 GHz networks.  The EX3700 could have a software bug or a problem with its hardware.
