Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

Hello

I have a Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band Range Extender connected to a Linksys WRT32X.

Linksys WRT32X = SID 5 GHz, Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band Range Extender = SID 5 GHz_5GEXT

I set up 5 Amazon echo dots on the 5 GHz_5GEXT network.

Everything went well.

Woke up the following morning and the echo dots where no longer connected to the network.

I checked the WiFi Channel on the extener and noticed it had changed to 100.

The echo dots only work on channels 36-48 and 149-165 as fas as I've read.

That evening the echo dots had reconnected to the network. I checked the WiFi Channel on the extener and noticed it had changed back to 36.

The following morning the extener wifi channel had changed back to 100 and the echo dots were offline.

When I first set the extender up I chose channel 36 on the extender.

The problem is, channel 36 is no longer available as an option on the WiFi Channel drop down, only channels 100 to 136 are available, even if I factory reset the extender only 100 to 136 are available.

Why can I no longer chose channel 36 on the extender? Are why does it keep automatically switching to a different channel?

I dont have the channel set to auto either.

I suspect this has something to do with the channel I have chose on the router?

But I dont really have a clue to be honest. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

Hi @scoty75,

Welcome to the community!

1. What is the firmware version of the extender?

2. The extender will follow your router's wireless channel.

3. Is your router 5GHz channel set to auto?

Re: Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

Hi @DexterJB,

1. Firmware Version: V1.0.0.42_1.0.59

2. The extender does not follow my router's wireless channel. The extender says channel 100. I can only select channels 100 to 136 or auto on the extender during setup, there is no option to select channel 36.

3. My router's 5GHz channel is set to 36 not auto.

Re: Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

Hi @scoty75,

Thank you for responding. Please try updating to the latest firmware version (1.0.0.46) then reset and re-configure the extender without reloading the previous config and check if the issue persists.

Re: Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

Hi @DexterJB

No change after installing the latest firmware on the extender.

2.4 GHz Network: Router channel 6, extender channel 6 (WiFi Channel set to Auto).

5 GHz Network: Router channel 36, extender channel 100 (WiFi Channel set to Auto in settings but after saving it always defaults to channel 100).

I cannot get the 5 GHz Network on the extender to save the WiFi Channel as Auto.

Re: Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

Hi @DexterJB

If I change the routers 5GHz network chanel to 100, only then will the extender allow me to select chanel 36 on the extenders 5GHz network.

Re: Nighthawk X4S Range Extender channel problem

further to my comment above, if I choose channel 100 on the router, the extender allows me to choose channel 36.

if I choose channel 36 on the router, the extender allows me to choose channel 136.

on the 5GHz network, the extender will not follow the channel the router is on.

on the 2.5GHz network, the extender will follow the channel the router is on.

why is this?

Have done some research and it appears my router is automatically changing the 5GHz channel due to Dynamic Frequency Selection in the UK. So if router is on channel 100 (which is band B where DFS is required).

I can set my router to channel 36 on the 5GHz network, but why is the extender refusing to follow?
