R7000 will not connect to wifi extenders

so i bought a R7000 with two DTS extenders. so i got them all set up used only one extender but then as soon as i make my router wpa and need a pasword for access it stops working. i tried using the wps button to reconnect but it never does unless i hard reset it again, i tried using the new extender i never used befor and it will only connect to the other extender not the router. am i doing something wrong or is it the router.
