connecting a WG602 v3 to a DG834 ADSL2+

I have the following setup and I would appreciate any help I can get.

I have a NG DG834 ADSL2+ modem router that has a Linksys 1900AC Wi-Fi Router attached to it by cable in bridge mode, this is located downstairs.

Upstairs I have a Netgear WG602 v3 AP that I'm trying to connect to the downstairs system to that all upstairs devices can go out to the Internet.

The WG602 is connected to a switch where all PC's, printers and webservers are connected.

It has been setup with a static IP address on the same subnet as all other devices.

I need to know in which mode do I need to run the WG602:

–Wireless Access Point. Operates as a standard 802.11b/g wireless access point.
–Point-to-Point Bridge. In this mode, the WG602v3 only communicates with another bridge-mode wireless station.
–Point-to-Multi-Point Bridge. In this mode, the WG602v3 acts as the “master” for a group of bridge-mode wireless stations. The other bridge-mode wireless stations send all traffic to this “master”, and do not communicate directly with each other.
–Wireless Repeater. In this mode, the WG602v3 operates as both a wireless access point and a wireless bridge.
–Client Mode. In this mode, the WG602v3 operates as a client bridge only, and sends all traffic to the remote wireless access point or peer device.

I've tried it at Wireless AP and Point-to-Point Bridge, this does not seem to be work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ok, in this case, you want to use client mode.  You will want to follow the instructions starting from page 4-9 in the manual.

There's a pretty big caveat mentioned on page 2-13 that only WEP security can be used while in any bridge mode.  This will require you to use WEP security on the Linksys.  As you may or may not know, WEP security is trivial to crack.  IOW, WEP is nearly tantamount to no security.

Personally, I would recommend that you retire the WG602 and buy a new wireless extender.  The WG602 is an old 802.11g router.  In ideal conditions, wireless throughput will be at best 21 Mbps or so for wired clients and will drop off significantly with distance.

  • It sounds like your WG602 is connected via Ethernet to the Linksys 1900AC.  If true, then the appropriate mode is Wireless Access Point.  Make sure that the WG602 is using a different Wi-Fi channel than the Linksys and disable the DHCP Server on the WG602, if necessary.
