Unable to upgrade firmware on WNR2000V5 from V1.0.0.20 to V1.0.0.34

I've read through the forms on the on going issues people are facing trying to upgrade their firmware on WNR2000V5 to V1.0.0.34.

Presently I am trying to upgrade WNR2000V5 via the "WNR2000v5-V1.0.0.34.img" file  from V1.0.0.20 to V1.0.0.34 but continue get the warning that :

"The firmware is incorrect"

To try to Troubleshoot I have tried:

1. Backing up router config and reset router to factory.

2. Tried loading from downloaded file (Even older firmwares 26 and 28) while plugged into the LAN port and wirelessly.

3. Tried letting the router upgrade through the "Check for new version from the Internet.". The upgrade reported no new updates.

4. Tried using desktop Genie app to load the firmware but it mentions there are no new updates.

As I am using Windows 10 I have also tried the browsers:

-IE11, IE Edge, Firefox 42, Chrome 47.

Still I am unable to upgrade the routers firmware version. Any recommendations where to go from here?

Re: Unable to upgrade firmware on WNR2000V5 from V1.0.0.20 to V1.0.0.34

I looked on Netgear's support website and they don't offer 1.0.0.20 for the WNR2000V5.  Are you sure that that's the model you have?  Can look at the model number printed on the sticker?

Thank you for your response. I took a screenshot after logging into the router.

Well, that's quite interesting.  Did you take a look at the sticker?  Does it also say WNR2000V5?

Thanks for obliging.  You definitely have a WNR2000V5.  Smiley Happy

It's a puzzle as to why you can't upgrade the firmware.  What are you using to unzip the download?  Perhaps you can try a different unzipper?

Re: Unable to upgrade firmware on WNR2000V5 from V1.0.0.20 to V1.0.0.34

Hi,

I tried using both Windows 10 built in unzipping utility and 7ZIP. If you want to eliminate this from the equation then Netgear can provide me with a self extracting ZIP file?

Also what puzzles me is why the router does not recognize it needs to upgrade its firmware when doing it from trying to download over the internet via the bios screen? Is this a known bug?

Finally, is there not a way to run this upgrade in debug mode? If we want to know what is happening we need a log of why it does not like the file. I doubt it is user error as the automated update from the bios setup screen is failing. I've never had this kind of issue on my previous netgear or linksys routers.

I'm kind of in the same boat.

(yes, the back of the router shows it is a N300 WiFi Router Model:WNR2000v5)

when logging in via browser It shows its firmware is V1.0.0.12

I have not yet hard reset it....trying that now.

Hard resetting didn't help.  It still refuses to upgrade the firmware.  I'll keep trying

Hi Pooterman,

Just curious which country you purchased you router from? Mine is from Canada. I wonder if regional settings come into play at all?

Any further recommendations on resolving this issue. I have tried all the recommendations. Do I need to contact netgear to exchange my router?

Re: Unable to upgrade firmware on WNR2000V5 from V1.0.0.20 to V1.0.0.34

@kagetora13 I have tried the auto firmware update using the "Check for new version from the Internet and it did pick the latest firmware.

How about if you try to follow this article and manually upload the latest firmware.

If it still does not work, better contact support.

Re: Unable to upgrade firmware on WNR2000V5 from V1.0.0.20 to V1.0.0.34

Hi Elaine,

I tried upgrading the firmware two ways:

(1) http://kb.n

etgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19841/~/reinstall-the-firmware-on-a-router-without-the-setup-cd-recovery-tool

Results:

The "tftp2.exe" tried 3 times and could not connect.

(2) http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22688/~/how-to-upload-firmware-to-a-wndr3700v2-router-...

Results:

-Firmware upgraded in under 30 seconds. The power led will blink  but the wifi will not turn on.

-reboot the system after 10 minutes and noticed that firmware did ot upgrade.

Any other feedback?

P.S. I did set , My local network adddress to 192.168.1.10 .
