Adding Disks
1934 TopicsReadyNAS 628 expansion not starting
ReadyNAS 628x running firmware 6.10.8 in RAID6 NAS has operated flawlessly for many years with eight (8) 14TB drives. A recent drive failure led me upgrade to: Four (4) 14TB drives Four (4) 24TB drives I added the 24TB drives one at a time and waited for it to finish sync before adding the next. After adding the fourth 24TB drive, no expansion occurred (I expected to gain 20TB) At this point I noticed the NAS seemed to be in Flex-RAID mode instead of X-RAID. I am not sure why it would be in Flex-RAID mode. I switched it to X-RAID in the hope expansion would occur. It did not. I rebooted it, thinking that may spur expansion but it seems not to have. At this point I'm unsure how to proceed. Thanks in advance for suggestions!Solved71Views0likes8CommentsIssue adding drive 4 to ReadyNAS nv+ v2
All I recently setup my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 from scratch with 3 3 TB Hitachi DK7SAD300 drives. The steps I followed and an issue I encountered are described in Best way to swap drives ReadyNAS nv+ v2 | NETGEAR Communities (https://community.netgear.com/discussions/readynas-use/best-way-to-swap-drives-readynas-nv-v2/2473844). After restoring all data back on the NAS, I added drive 4 of identical specifications. Note that I previously tested all drives with CrystalDiskInfo to make sure they were fine. And I performed a full erase using WD's KitFox. For reasons I do not understand, the RAID volume md2 (corresponding with volume C) does not behave the way it should. Specifically: When I first added disk 4 (while the NAS was powered down - i.e. a cold add), it only created partitions sdd1 and sdd2. sdd3 that was supposed to have been added to md2 as device number 4 was never created, this is also confirmed by system.log. When examining the partition table using gdisk, it only shows sdd1 and sdd2 only. Performing a "hot" remove and add of disk 4 had the exact same result as (1). While it might appear logical that there's somehow an issue with disk 4, I proceeded by performing a "hot" remove and add of disk 2. This time, all 3 partitions sdd1, sdd2 and sdd3 were created. However, on disk 2 only sdb1 and sdb2 were present somehow (what happened to sdb3?). As a result, a sync was automatically performed for md2. Once complete, md2 consisted of partitions sda3, sdc3 and sdd3. At least (3) rules out an issue with disk 4. I proceeded by performing a "hot" remove and add of disk 3. This time, all 3 partitions sdb1, sdb2 and sdb3 were created. However, on disk 3 only sdc1 and sdc2 were present somehow (what happened to sdc3?). As a result, a sync was automatically performed for md2. Once complete, md2 consisted of partitions sda3, sdb3 and sdd3. You can clearly see that the most recent drive hot added is missing its third partition using gdisk: Clearly, there's a pattern here. The disk that has been hot added last loses its third partition somehow. I know this NAS is no longer supported, my next options include: (a) Following the steps described in Disk not resyncing | NETGEAR Communities (https://community.netgear.com/discussions/readynas-use/disk-not-resyncing/871010) to manually create the third partition sdc3 on disk 3. Hopefully, this will trigger the partition to be added to the md2 volume (and lead to an increase in capacity of the volume). (b) Performing a reinstall of the OS without destroying the data on md2. (c) Backing up all data and perform a destructive reinstall of the OS destroying all data including on md2. Would appreciate your thoughts here! I have a RN104 in RAID5 (4x 2TB) configuration and one disk failed. This is my first time having to replaced a failed disk (also have a RN316 and a RN102). I backed up to a portable USB drive before attempting to replace the failed disk. Pulled out the offending disk and popped-in the replacement and nothing happened after waiting for an hour. No choice but to reboot it and after it came back, it started to sync. 3 days later sync complete. Feeling good.60Views0likes2CommentsMessed up trying to upgrade drives, help!
Hi, I could use some help upgrading the drives in my ReadyNAS RN212. I had 2 Seagate 6TB drives in RAID1, and wanted to upgrade to 2 12TB drives. I don't think I followed the correct procedure in doing so. Hopefully someone can get me back on track. What I did: Hot-swapped the 6GB drive in bay #2 for 12TB drive. It synced with the 6TB no problem, everything green in the Volumes RAID display. I put aside 6GB drive #2. Then I went to swap 6GB drive in bay #1. I thought that all I needed to do was hot-swap it, and then the 12TB in bay #2 would sync to the new 12TB drive. What happened was I lost access to the web admin dashboard, and since the LEDs were not flashing like they were syncing, I decided to revert back to the 6GB #1. So I powered down, and put 6GB #1 back in bay #1. However, when powered back up, and accessed the web dashboard, I saw that the drives were now re-syncing, which I did not want since 12TB #2 had already synced. Powered down again, and decided to try and assess the state of the drives. Pulled the 12TB #2, and powered up with only 6GB #1. Volumes dashboard then showed the 6GB #1 as red, RAID1, and with 5.45TB data present. Plugged the 12TB #2 (that had previously synced), and it also shows as red, no RAID type, no data present. How it stands and how to proceed: So I currently have only the 6GB #2 plugged in, it's showing green, RAID1, with all 5.45TB data present. Now I want to properly upgrade to my 2 12TB drives. How do I get these new drives setup in RAID1, with my 5.45TB data from the single working 6TB drive synced over? Can it be done via hot-swapping & syncing, or must I start with the 12TB as empty RAID1 and manually copy the data? Thanks very much for any help! Here's a question for how to best setup ReadyNAS to ReadyNAS backup in front view, using rsync... I have had them backing up for some time, no biggie, however one annoying thing is that when I backup pulling from the backup NAS, I setup the backup job and specified the remote NAS as the server and for PATH I specified the share name, or browsed for it. I did not see any way to specify, say: share/* I had to specify the share to backup, so I ahve that name for PATH. For the local destination I specified the local share name and also a path, which I chose to use the name of the remote share. I opted to put each backup on its own share, one share on the backup server for every share on the main NAS, but because of the way I did that backup, it put the backup inside a folder named the same as the main NAS share. In theory this could be good I guess? But anyway now that I'm trying to restore, it will only restore also to a folder on the main NAS..which then has to all be moved after the fact. I think I would prefer to have something closer to parity so that I pull from either direction and the rsync process will just bring the local machine up to date according to what is remote. Though I'm not sure if either one will remove stuff locally if its not on the remote? Anyway, what do you guys do, what is your preferred scenario and if so, what would be the best configuration in each direction so that I can do easy restores right back in place. If I only lost a few things, for example, it would be nice to just do a pull and bring anything back that is missing, but if the destination is also removing content as I remove it locally...then no...I wouldn't want to do that during a restore, that would be bad. But its annoying to have to mv everything out of the sub folder after restore. I already ran somehow into a problem where mv complained about non-empty folders and then left things broken enough I had to basically re-restore everything from scratch again. what are your thoughts on these matters?293Views0likes2CommentsRecommended Approach for upgrading drive
I have to replace a drive with some early smartctl errors, looking for advice on how to best proceed. I am going to be upgrading the size and also moving volumes round between a couple of drives that makes sense with the new drives. This config is NOT using raid at all. I have the following configuration (which is backed up to another ReadyNas for redundancy). slot1 = SSD with OS6 on it and not much else. slot2 = volume1, smartctl errors started showing up 6TB slot3 = (empty) slot4 = volume2, no errors 10TB So I bought 12TB drive which I intend to use for volume2 after I copy the data to it. I really would prefer to keep the same volume name for it, which is one of the questions I have. After copying the contents from volume2 to the new drive, hopefully labeled as volume2 now, then format the 10TB drive and copy the contents from volume1 to it. Same as before I want the 10TB to have the same name as was being used before, "volume1" Finally pull out the error drive and probably chuck it since its not trustworthy anymore due to smartctl errors. Finally make sure they are in the slots the same way, volume1 in slot2, volume2 in slot4. Later on I might mirror one or both of those, but not now. So question is how to proceed with this. I'd really prefer to do the copying inside the box to avoid lengthly restore from my other backup NAS. But I don't know how I can put in the new drive and use the same volume name, guess I can't. I'd have to be able to rename the existing volumes to something else in order to create the new volume with the same name as before and then copy it over, but I only found long and complicated post from SandShark about renaming a volume and basically decided not to try to do that. Otherwise I could just pull the old volume out, put the new drive in, add it as a new volume with the same name as the one that was pulled out and then copy the data from my other backup NAS, but that will be much slower due to going over ethernet. So I guess any suggestions anyone has for how I can shuffle these volumes to the new larger devices and pull out the smallest one with the errors, would be appreciated. Ideally keeping the same volume names for the end result as what I have been using until now.589Views0likes17CommentsRND6000 Remove inactive volumes Disk 1,2,3,4,6
Hello, I am requesting your assistance in my attempt to recover my data following a failure of one of my hard drives (slot 5) on my RNDP-6000 running under OS6. 1°) I replaced my defective slot5 hard drive (4 to) with a smaller one (3 to) so as not to lose any data. 2°) The reconstruction seemed to have worked because I still had access to all the data, but the drives remained greyed out. 3°) I replaced the drive again with an other 4 to hard drive. 4°) The NAS displays two volumes: - a 13 TB volume for drives 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, - a 1 TB volume on drive 6. The NAS requests the deletion of the volumes from inactive hard disks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 (13 to volume) and disk 6 (1 to volume). 5°) I deleted the 1 to partition from disk 6, thinking that it was causing problems with the volume reconstruction, but this did not change anything. Is there a solution that will allow me to recover my original volume and start rebuilding without losing my data? I found this article, which seems to be the solution to my problem, but I don't know enough about mdadm commands to adapt it to my problem. ReadyNAS RN424 | Inactive Volume + RAID Issue | NETGEAR Communities I hope one of you can help me. Thank you in advance for your help!543Views0likes4CommentsReadynas 104 lost volumes
I have a Readynas 104 with 4 X 2 TB drives RAID 5. All drives healthy. OS 6 Wanting to increase size of the volume, replaced drive 1 with 4 TB drive. Resync started. Within a couple hours of the resync, disk 4 and system went from degraded to dead. Now when I boot the system it’s asking to create a new volume which I have not done believing the data is still intact. I did remove the new 4 TB drive and put the original back into bay 1. Looking for advice on what to do to get at least most of the data back if possible. Thank you476Views0likes4Comments
