Althought the R7000 router has support for MAC and Windows clients when using the Netgear R7000 OPENVPN built-in server, it does not support Linux as a client. See the following link: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/R7000-VPN-Service-TAP-or-TUN/m-p/1002408#M20691 Currently I am running the latest "supported" firmware version: V1.0.4.30_1.1.67 as of Nov 10 2015 There is a great number of Linux users and not being able to take advantage of the OPENVPN server in the Router seems to be a big limitation/oversight. I personally purchased this router because of the fat that it had a built in OENVPN server, so that I could connect my Android and Linux devices to my network. As I discovered after purchasing the router neither of these platforms are supported. It seems that IOS and Android support is coming, but no plans to implement Linux. It may be possible to manually configure a Linux client if Netgear would publish how OPENVPN is implemented. I understand that this would not be "supported" by Netgear, but for those of us who have some technical skill we could possibly implement it and make it work for our needs. Providing information such as and not limited to the following would be very useful since OPENVPN is open source software: Tunnel Device (TUN/TAP) Protocol UDP/TCP) Port number (1194 -> official port, or another port defined by Netgear) Encryption cipher (None, blowfish, AES-512/256/192/128 CBC, etc....) Hash algorithm (SHA1/256/512,MD4/5,none, etc....) TLS Cipher (none, AES-128/256 SHA, etc...) LZO Compression (Adaptive, yes/No, none) Authority/ Password usage TLS Auth Key usage ? PKCS12 Key usage? Static Key usage? ns-cert-type server ? Is access limited to the local network, to access the internet only, or to both local and internet? etc..... This post is essentially to ask for Netgear to provide the following: Implement a Linux client file and instructions on how to implement it for the various distributions of Linux. Provide comprehensive documentation on how OPENVPN is implemented in the R7000 router or any other router that has an OPENVPN server built-in.95KViews13likes7CommentsNighthawk R7000 Traffic Meter Monthly Limit Increase
Please update the Traffic Meter feature for the Nighthawk R7000 to have an increased Monthly Limit that can account into the Tbytes. Comcast as an ISP has began to implement data caps at 1024Mb which equates to 1048576Mbytes but the Monthly Limit field only allows me to enter 104857Mbytes, missing the last digit which is significantly less than the data cap. Given that Comcast is monitoring the traffic it should be available to impose limits and monitor traffic independent of Comcast. It is very important this feature be added. Currently running V1.0.7.10_1.2.3 firmware. This was mentioned in the forums and it was suggested that this be submitted at this location in that post. See below; https://community.netgear.com/t5/VPN-Firewalls/Bugfix-Request-Increase-maximum-monthly-limit-for-Traffic/m-p/1185320#M6496 Original Post "This in regards to the Traffic Meter monitoring function of the SRX5308 VPN Firewall. However this would apply to any device in Netgear's product lineup that monitors the amount of IP traffic per month. Currently the traffic meter can set a monthly traffic limit of up to a maximum of 256000 MB (~250 GB). However, this is insufficient for those who are using Comcast as an ISP where the limit is set to 1 Terabyte (1024 Gb). Request that the montly traffic limit setting be adjustable in the Terabyte range." Reply "I advise you to post your concern as feature request in the Idea Exchange Board for Business here. Be reminded that the community members who will give kudos to your idea will help as the development team will be reviewing the post that has the most kudos and it might be considered to be added on the future functionality of the product."60KViews8likes20CommentsNETGEAR Routers and CVE-2016-582384 security vulnerability
I am a bit concerned about this recent article: http://www.zdnet.com/article/two-netgear-routers-are-vulnerable-to-trivial-to-remote-hack/ https://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/582384 Details: Overview Netgear R7000 and R6400 routers and possibly other models are vulnerable to arbitrary command injection. Description CWE-77: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in a Command ('Command Injection') Netgear R7000, firmware version 1.0.7.2_1.1.93 and possibly earlier, and R6400, firmware version 1.0.1.6_1.0.4 and possibly earlier, contain an arbitrary command injection vulnerability. By convincing a user to visit a specially crafted web site, a remote attacker may execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on affected routers. A LAN-based attacker may do the same by issuing a direct request, e.g. by visiting: http:///cgi-bin/;COMMAND An exploit leveraging this vulnerability has been publicly disclosed. Impact By convincing a user to visit a specially crafted web site, a remote attacker may execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on affected routers. Solution The CERT/CC is currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem and recommends the following workaround. Discontinue use Exploiting this vulnerability is trivial. Users who have the option of doing so should strongly consider discontinuing use of affected devices until a fix is made available. --------------------------- Can someone from NetGear address this issue? I am running one level behind on my firmware, because I liked the fact that my router could double as my ARLO base station. However, reading this warning from CERT is causing me to be concerned. This router was not cheap, and I have had it for less than a year. If I have to get rid of it, becaue the issue cannot be resolved, then I would like some kind of compensation or trade in value. Hi, I have a Netgear R7000 router which I purchased 4 months ago. Recently it has been dropping the wifi connection intermittantly which seems to be getting worse, which is really annoying when trying to download large files! Plugging in a network cable (via PowerLine plugs) works solidly with no dropout. The WiFi will disconnect for a minute or two, during which time the internet, network devices and the router (192.168.1.1) are unreachable. This is happening on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks and is affecting two laptops (one running Win7 and one running Win10), as well as iOs, so I am sure it is a router issue and not a device issue. I have tried changing wifi channels to channels which are unused by other networks around here (confirmed using a WiFi scanner), but the problem remains. The firmware is version 1.0.7.2_1.1.93 and I am using readyshare with a USB 2 hard disk connected to the rear port. Has anyone had similar issues before? Thanks!Solved92KViews3likes28CommentsSOLVED: Slow wireless internet passthrough speed after firmware update
So I first purchased a Nighthawk in July 2014 and it was awesome for a while. Then in notice is past couple months my streaming services were skipping and buffering more that usual (which was almost never with the Nighthawk). I have a 110Mbps connection (from Comcast and through an SB6141 modem) but all of a sudden was only getting 10 Mbps (or less) passthrough on wireless 5G band (at start of test speed would sometimes be as high as 50 Mbps, but over a few seconds would drop to nothing..) Wired speeds were fine. Always 110Mbps+. Tried several different channels and factory resets of the router, wireless speed was still slow. Logged onto Netgear website and submitted a support ticket.... within 2 hours they emailed me back with an RMA and the next day a new unit was being FedEx'd to me. Tech support rep said it's a known hardware issue in some units... I was super impressed with the customer service, it seriously was a no hassle replacement that took all of 15 minutes of my time. EXCEPT when I received the replacement router in a few days it had the SAME PROBLEM. As soon as the new router was on and I logged in, I upgraded to the latest version of firmware, did a factory reset, and ran Speedtest. And I had the same problem: internet passthrough speed on all my wireless devices was awful. Less than 10Mbps when I have a 110+Mbps connection. (Wired speeds were fine, so was not a provider or modem issue). Contacted support again and they instructed me to download latest firmware on laptop and manually upgrade router, doing a factory reset both before and after the upgrade. They also told me to try turning off WMM (made no difference in passthrough speed, but did lower my laptops link speed from 433Mbps to 54Mbps!). I tried all of that... still slow wireless passthough speed. The only thing that changed since I first got a Nighthawk back in July 2014 (and I ran speedtests then and had a 110+Mbps wireless speed at that time), is that the firmware has upgraded several times... which got me thinking... I downloaded from Netgear support the last 5 versions of firmware for the Nighthawk. http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/product/R7000#sear... I then manually downgraded the Nighthawk to each previous version (doing a factory reset both before and after each installation) and ran Speedtest each time. Once I got down to Version R7000-V1.0.3.24_1.1.20 (Released 2/12/14) and ran Speedtest, the PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. Wireless speeds on all devices (laptop, HTC One M7, and iPad Air 2) were all back up to 110Mbps or more!!! Hope this experiment helps out someone else... if your're experiencing slow internet passthrough speeds and it's not your link speed (i.e. radio interference) that's the issue, there seems to be a serious problem with the last couple newer versions.. Try downgrading to firmware version R7000-V1.0.3.24_1.1.20Solved177KViews2likes22CommentsRouter randomly blocking websites
This is one of the stranger things that I have ever seen. My router is connected to the internet...and I can get to the internet...at least some of it. It is blocking certain websites however. Now to be clear..these are not FTP sites..or anything that I would think should cause any form of Security to block. As an example...one site is the bank where I pay my monthly house mortgage. Another is the website of a local University. I used to be able to get to both websites ...but something changed a few weeks ago. There are no blocked IP's ...or blocked anything of any kind set up in the configs. I even went to far as to add access of a PC's IP to "allow access to blocked sites" just as a test..that does not work either. I have reset more times that I care to say. I have set the router to the factory default. I have reloaded the firmware. I have looked for anything or any reason in this router as to why it might be blocking these websites and I can not find anything. I am sure some are asking if I have hard isolated it to the router. Yes I have. When my cell is on the house WIFI, it can not get to these sites. When WIFI is turned off, my cell can get to the sites fine. This is happening to anything routing through that router...both wired and wireless. I have confirmed with my ISP that they are not blocking anything. I know they are not the issue anyways because when I bypass the router and go straight to the cable modem, the websites are no longer blocked. In addition, I have used an old TP-Link router in place of this router and the sites are not blocked. For anybody wondering about Chrome, Firefox and IE... I tried all 3. I cleared the cache and cookies in all 3. As I said...this problem is hard isolated to this router. I am really hoping that somebody can offer some advice because this thing is about to go out a window. I did not pay this much money for this level of aggravation in my life. I tried to call Netgear... I got as far as the request for the Serial...where I am supposed to say "Got It". And no matter how I said it, yelled it....etc..the Netgear phone system just kept playing that stupid music and telling me to say "Got it" when ready. Honestly...if they can not manage a phone system any better than this, perhaps this is what I should expect from this router. Yes..I called at least 5 times and got the same exact experience each time.Solved250KViews2likes21Commentsr7000 drops internet connection
I've been reading reviews now and it appears now that the following is a known issue that they just refuse to fix. I've been an IT System Administrator for over 20 years and I would not buy another Netgear product again after dealing with their support which doesn't admit there is a known problem. I had the Netgear WNDR3400 and never had any trouble with it. I bought the Nighthawk R7000 and for $200 and my experience with other Netgear hardware I thought this unit would be great. I have had nothing but trouble with it. The Nighthawk r7000 is constantly going down. I upgrade firmware and it craps out and I have to redo the configuration. I get up in the morning and no wireless, I have to reboot it. Sometimes it goes down 2-3 times a day. The other day I got up and again no wireless, I rebooted and that didn't fix it. I go into the configuration and it says the wireless is turned off. First time I had this issue and you have to hold the wireless button on the front for about 10 seconds to turn it back on. This is ridicules that this unit has so many issues. Of course it's now out of the 90 warranty and Netgear says as long as the correct lights are on it not a hardware issue so pay us to troubleshoot or fix it yourself. When the device is a lemon, you can't fix that! NOW THAT I’M WRITING THESE REVIEWS, I FIND THAT USERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUES I’M HAVING. THEY HAVE ALSO CONTACTED NETGEAR TO NO AVAIL. BOTTOM LINE, BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT.Solved45KViews2likes28CommentsR7000 - Disney Circle - Internet speeds through router slowdown
Creating a new thread to focus on this one issue. I don't believe this is a general slow wifi/slow internet issue, but is clearly Circle related. All tests done on wired connection via my Netgear R7000. I have a cable internet plan advertised as 150/15. This was all done on firmware 1.0.9.14, and I did a factory reset and setup my options yesterday fresh. I have never enabled QoS or Web Traffic. I do have IPv6 configured and it works. Circle was enabled now for 24 hours. Speed slowly sinks down to 37Mbps. I see this speedtest: Turn off Circle via webpage on router and hit apply. This saves quickly, no reboot of router. Now I see full speed, and see how solid the download speed is? I turn Circle back on, hit apply and I get this speed test. All tests run inside 2 minutes: Turn Circle back off, and retest. Going to leave it off for 24 hours now to test: Looking for any support from Netgear if this is expected, and if it is fixable. Willing to help test if needed, as Cirlce seems like a great feature.20KViews2likes43Comments
