I have tried to use a Powered Seagate USB drive (Mystorage 3.0) to backup the data folders on our Netgear Readynas 314. The external backup drive has been cleanly formatted with Seagate's Format utility as FAT32. The drive initially displays as a volume in the ReadyNAS and I setup a backup and click start. After 5-10 mins it fails saying unable to create files/folders on drive. Then the drive disappears as a volume until I reboot the NAS drive. We have the latest bios and the Seagate external drive works fine on several laptops and PC's.2.5KViews0likes11CommentsReadynas 102 restarts services constantly - unable to access data.
My ReadyNas 102 running firmware 6.7.4, seems to be constantly restarting services. I'm sometimes able to see the shares... sometimes even get a few files..., but then it "disappears" and the network location is gone. ... until a minute or so later. Even the web-ui ... I'm sometimes able to see the status-screen before it jumps back into a loading-page waiting for the ui to become responsive again. I've tried reinstalling the OS, but it didn't work. I was thinking about flashing new firmware, but that requires the services to be open long enough for the process to finish.... Is it possible to connect the drive to a computer - windows or linux... and get the data through USB? The drive seems to be ok, although; It's the remains of a degraded RAID-1 setup. Hi, for some time I had no problems with my ReadyNas 104. But today I was reconfiguring my setup - concerning USB-device - and keep getting problems. The main problem is: I keep getting the message "__percpu_counter_add+3c", but I am going to tell the whole story to understand the whole history of the problem: I have connected a Fantec QB-35US3 with 4 disks connected to the first USB connector at the rear of the NeatGear. Until now with no real problems. The four drives I had up til now had the following capacity: 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 5 TB. All four drives are shown after connecting the device. They are connected as four USB devices and I can use them via network with no problems. Now I bought another 5 TB drive and the problems began. First I switched the 500 GB drive with the new 5 TB. Reconnecting the USB drive I only got one 5 TB drive shown. Rebooting gave the same results - except that I got sometimes the other 5TB drive, but not both at once! After some searching in the forums I found a possible solution for that: So I upgraded the Firmware from 6.6.0 to 6.6.1. Result: Now no USB drive was recognized. Even rebooting did nothing. So I connected the Fantec to the other USB on the rear of the ReadyNAS and... it worked... BUT again only one 5TB drive was recognized. Same problem as before. Next idea: I have a second Fantec casing and switched to that. At first I only put in the two 5 TB drives. And that worked! So I put in two more drives with 3 TB and everything looked fine. All four drives are shown and seem ready to use. I don't get it why it's working - but okay. I'm happy. So I thought! Now I wanted to start my backup and I keep getting the above mentioned error message in the ReadyNAS display: "__percpu_counter_add+3c" The backup starts copying some files at first, but then it is stopping. The ReadyNAS is freezing. To reactivate it I have to pull the power cord. Reconnecting the device I get the message that there is a problem and I don't get write capability. So I connected the Fantec to my PC and I got the message that the file system is corrupt. After repairing it I could reconnect it to the ReadyNAS but I get the same error when I start the Backup. I tried copying via ReadyNAS internal backup schedule and using a pc via network. Both result in the same error. Using the USB drive directly at my PC everything works fine. I'm doing my backup now using the PC via network. But that's not the way I wanted it. All drives are formatted in NTFS. Any ideas what's the problem?2.1KViews0likes0CommentsBackup from Usb to RAIDiator 4 system

Firmware 6.6.0 I wanted to backup my photo's to my USB drive. The USB-drive is already used for a former backup of the photo's, and I want to add the latest photo's to my USB-backup. a so called incremental backup As soon as started the backup, I get a system hang: the front panel shows an error on row 1: __percpu_counter and on row 2: _add+3c after the reboot, the readynas is working properly. No entries in any logbook. I use a 500GB Seagate Pipeline HD in a Sharkoon docking station of yhe front USB-port. The HD is formatted in NTSC format. The question now is: what's going wrong?3.7KViews0likes13CommentsRN31200 Backup to External USB fails due to snapshots
Model Number RN312 with two 2TB hard drives. Firmware 6.6 I am in the process of upgrading my harddrives to larger capacity drives. Following the instructions, the recommended first step is to backup your data. Therefore, I have connected an external USB drive to the NAS device and created a couple backup jobs. Selected the source share and the USB_HDD2 as the local destination location. However, when I try to run the backup job, it fails saying that the source path doesn't exist. Upon reviewing the logs, it seems to be looking for some kind of snapshot files. I have tried a number of recommendations from other posts (i.e. using the Rsync protocol with localhost, different USB ports, making the snapshots folder accessible, etc.) I even went as far as deleting snapshots from the share that I am trying to backup. It almost as though the NAS device thinks there is still a snapshot there, when there is not (at least from what I can see from the GUI). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have spent 2 days researching online and have yet to find anything that works. The last time I had issues with snapshots Netgear's answer was to reset the device, but that meant I had to back everything up first, which this time my not be possible. Hoping someone else has dealt with an issue like this that might be able to offer some insight or guidance. I am thoroughly confused. Does RN104 support UPS monitoring over USB? ReadyNAS OS 6.4 Software Manual states: "The ReadyNAS supports UPS devices managed over SNMP and UPS devices managed over a remote connection. It does not support monitoring over USB." ReadyNAS OS 6.6 Software Manual states: "The ReadyNAS supports UPS devices managed over SNMP, USB, and over a remote connection." Am I correct in assuming that the RN104 now accepts UPS with USB connection whereas it didn't before? (which was not long ago). I have yet to find a reasonably priced UPS supporting SNMP (i.e. under £100). Most support USB though, so that seems the only route.Solved3.9KViews0likes2CommentsEncrypt backup to external USB drive in OS6.6.0
There are some older threads asking about encrypting an external USB backup, but no good solution and nothing current I can find. I backup to external USB drives x 2 formatted in EXT4, and rotate the backups offsite. I check the USB drive integrity using gparted in Ubuntu (having had a backup drive fail unexpectedly). Recently, I realized that the backup should be encrypted. I am surprised that OS 6.6 appears not to offer this feature. Am I missing something? Is there a solution someone has figured out? I do not wish to spend on encrypted cloud storage. MurraySolved3.2KViews0likes1CommentRN104 doesnt see WD Elements 3TB USB HDD on any USB ports
Hi, I have had up until yesterday two 64 GB USB sticks in the two rear ports of my RN104 for backup of files. I was using them both for back up of different stuff, but its just not enough room. So I have a WD Elements drive from around 2013, USB 2.0 3TB sitting in my desk, so I remove the USB sticks and plug this WD drive in and...... nothing. I see the activity light on the drive going just crazy so I gave it some time. Hours really, checked it this morning and nothing. Popped in the two USB sticks and they both show up in the GUI no problem. Remove them and try WD Elements again and nada. I check the HDD formatting on Windows 7 machine and its NTFS as it came from the factory. Reformatted anyway, still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas how to get this thing to recognize a 3TB USB HDD? Firmware note. I had this morning 6.5.1, updated to 6.5.2 this morning and no love, so I went backward to 6.5.0. Still nothing. Does any USB HDD work? Let me know and I'll go get one. Thanks for any help on this. KN.Solved4.4KViews0likes3CommentsExternal USB Drive, write protected in EXT4 ???
Ok, so after having issues trying to use external USB disk to backup my ReadyNAS, i did some tests... If I format the disk as NTFS, it works OK read/write. It appears that if i format the disk as EXT4, i can't write on it, and can't change permissions. Then i tried to format it as EXT3, and after half an hour it still didn't finished formatting. When i tried to eject the disk the ReadyNAS crashed. After reboot, the disk disk was not even seen when i plugged/unplugged it... Ok, so i plug it on my Mac and format it as HFS+ then it is seen again on the readyNAS. So, as HFS+, the disk is seen OK as read/write... Then tried again to format as EXT3 and it took again ages to format... (so long that i didn't wait the end) So, i will end using NTFS, even if it's a shame to use such format on a "linux" box...3.7KViews0likes3Comments
