No internet detected with fibre
Hey guys, have the orbi ac3000 version, I live in New Zealand and have trustpower fibre. If I connect my orbi to the modem (Huawei) it will not connect any internet on setup, if I connect it via my old router it works fine. I want to cut my old router out of the equation. Have tried all the power recycling and resetting etc but still will not accept the orbi as a router direct to modem but will accept other routers with different mac addresses etc. any ideas would be great? I have spent a total of 5 hours on hold with netgear and the suggestions given have been unsuccessful, really gutted having spent more than I should on this product to solve my coverage issues...

- F00FIGHTERSAspirantI recently got gigabit fiber and had the exact same issue. Here's how I fixed it.
1. Power off the fiber modem, the Orbi route, and satellite.
2. Turn on your fiber modem and let it sit for a good 5 minutes or longer.
3. Turn on the Orbi router only and immediately push in the tiny reset button on the back using a pin or needle for about 2 seconds.
4. Leave it alone for a few minutes. Then connect To it wirelessly and attempt to surf the net.
If it works, then power on your Orbi satellite.
If you're unsuccessful, try hitting the reset button on your fiber modem, and repeat the same steps again with the Orbi. - Thanks for the tips, sadly no luck. Tried a few times and every time it won't accept the internet unless it's coming through the old nettcomm router. I tried switching the LAN port out of the fibre modem, but interestingly both routers only recieve internet if coming from the LAN port 1 of modem. I tried using the MAC address of my nettcomm router for my orbi but still no luck. So I am still stuck with both routers plugged in and orbi recieving internet through LAN port of old router. Any further idea guys? Tech support have been no use and impossible to get through to and my service providers Trustpower don't even seem to know what I'm talking about.

Just leave your old router in place and run Orbi in access point mode.
- Thanks but I'm maxed out on power points as it is, would like to use the super expensive piece of gear as it is designed to be used. Will have to go for another round of hours of waiting with the tech support team I'm guessing.

The discriminating feature of Orbi is WIFI coverage, not router features, which are rather limited. If you use Orbi in AP mode you will receive the benefits you paid for.
It's possible your issues are with your ISP (such as requiring VLAN tagging) not Orbi and there's nothing Netgear tech support can do to help.
- Absolutely, don't get me wrong it's wifi coverage is great haven't bothered putting it in ap mode, what's the benefit? Working fine as it is? It's just as I say would be nice to have another power point and one less thing in the loop. Sure I won't be the only
One with this problem so hopefully between Service provider and netgear I can find an answer. So just to clarify no downside running the orbi through a cheap router other than the things I mentioned?- st_shawMaster
The benefit of AP mode is you can use whatever router you want. In my case I'm using a router with IPSEC sitei-to-site and L2TP remote access VPN capabilities. This allows me secure remote access at the full speed of my Internet connection (80 Mbps.) Some people say AP mode also frees up processor resources and makes Orbi run faster. When another router is in use, using AP mode avoids double NAT, which can cause problems with games and applications that need ports forwarded.
If you get Orbi it working in router mode, please let us know what the problem was. I'm curious what would prevent it from connecting.
- F00FIGHTERSAspirantI'm sorry it's still not working for you. And I agree, you shouldn't have to resort to access point mode because you want fewer devices between your fiber modem. Additionally, depending on the type of old third-party router, it could already be diverting less bandwidth directly to the Orbi. The Orbi is an expensive setup so it's only natural one would have higher expectations.
That being said, it's difficult to say who is at fault. Some routers don't play nice with certain modems. You can try these additional options.
1. Power cycle your fiber modem.
2. Perform a hard reset of the Orbi and set it up like a new system.
If that doesn't work, try contacting your fiber provider and insure that your modem is in bridge mode. I understand your old router works when attached, but it doesn't hurt to verify this information, anyway. If your fiber modem has wireless capabilities, you'll definitely want to make sure they're turned off and that it is in bridge mode. Then try setting up Orbi again. Good Luck!
