Streaming Blu-Ray video over Orbi (hardwired) - Errors

Hey all,

I have an RBK50 system with router + 1 sattellite.  These are connected via a cat 5e hardwired cable across my house.

On the main router I have a Synology NAS device plugged in with my Blu-Ray movies backed up in MKV format (uncompressed, with lossless sound).  On the sattellite I have an Oppo BDP-203 player capable of streaming form the network.

When trying to watch videos with this setup I expereince random pauses of 2-10 seconds mulitple times while watching.  Streaming a similiarly backed up DVD I get maybe one pause, but it still happens.   This did no happen with a my previous setup (Nighthawk router + hard wired gigabit switch).

The rest of our network connectivity has been fine.  Is there a way I can verify if the network is experiencing issue while watching a movie?  Logs I can check?  Trying to verify it is the network and not the player having issues.

Thanks!

Was a factory reset performed after updating the FW? This needs to be done for this version of FW.

Where are the NAS and BD player connected? Behind the router or behind the Sat?

Any Network switches in between the router and satellite? Mfr and model#?

What kind of MKV files and resolution are these files? High bandwidth? High resolution?

Try disabling MIMO, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming and 20/40Mhz Coexistence...

I don't think i ever did the factory reset, I'll try that!  Can i just restore settings from a backup after that?

NAS is connected tot he router, blu-ray is connected to the satellite.  Everything is hard wired (including the backhaul).  No switches.

The MKV's are full audio/video bitrate for blu-ray as I don't compress  them at all.

Try a reset and set up from scratch. Run a quick test to see if streaming problem is resoved before applying last saved configuration.

Possible that the bandwidth of these files could be too high going from Satellite to NAS.

I would run a test as well and connect the player to the back of the router or vs versa, connect NAS to satellite with player and test.

      Thanks.

This was all working fine before my switch to an Orbi based system, so if its too much for Orbi, I guess I'm abandoning ship.

let us know how it does after reset.

I have a similar set up however my streaming device and NAS are on the LAN side connect via Gb switch and not between the Satellite and router. I do have a wireless bridge connected to the Satellite which services a DISH Joey. Streams video fine there however the bandwidth I presume is way smaller than raw BD data.

Possbile that the Satellite alone could be bad. Something to contact NG support. Ask about an RMA. Let them know about your configurations you've tested. I presume any configuration should work, especially wired back haul.

  • What model of Synology NAS?  I have a synology DS416Play and had the EXACT same issue as you.  My NAS has two network interfaces and I had them setup in a load balancing bridge (the automatic method that synology says doesn't require 802.1q trunking).  This worked perfectly with my previous ASUS router but when connected to the Orbi caused pausing/skips in MKV playback.  I had to remove the bridge and run the NAS on only one interface.  The Orbi has issues with bridged interfaces.

Synologoy Diskstation 412+.  Only one network interface is even connected, so definitely not bridged.

Doing the iperf will let you know if it’s a bandwidth issue. I also recommend doing an ssh into your NAS and doing a ping against your oppo. This will check for packet loss. Is your satellite using wired or wireless backhaul?
  • You can also try running a bandwidth test to your synology using iPerf3.

    1. Install iperf3 package on your synology NAS from here http://www.jadahl.com/iperf/DSM_6.2/

    2. Enable SSH in the control panel

    3. ssh into your NAS and run   iperf3 -s  this will put iperf into server listening mode.

    4. install iperf3 on a device (if using iOS i recommend HE.net tools)

    5. on your client device run   iperf3 -c NAS-IP-ADDRESS -t 10 -P 10

     - this will send data to your NAS in multiple processes and will tell you the max transfer rate.

On my setup I ran this from a Zidoo X9S android media player hard wired to my satellite.  Wireless backhaul to the router and gone a consistent 786 Mbps.  Router is in the basement and satellite is upstairs.  I'm able to stream 4K HDR bluray ISO without issue...only after I disabled interface bridging on my NAS.
