Advice required on what I need to buy
Hi all
I've been tasked with distributing broadband across a campus and have a few questions regarding switching...
Another department has installed a 1000mb BT broadband bearer within a WAN room which I can use. The connecting network rooms across the site is via OM1 backbone (Presented ST either end).
The core switch off of the bearer has a spare 10gb port configured for public use. I need to add another distribution switch from theirs as I have to reach numerous buildings. The port that has been configured is at 10 gb, does this mean I have to use a 10gb distribution switch? Also because my back bone is only OM1 and some of the cable lengths are around the 500m mark one maybe closer to 700m I wont achieve 10g over these lengths???
From the network rooms the LAN - horizontal is copper. Would I need a copper switch with a 10gb SFP uplink or could this be a 1gb SFP??? What happens If I use a 10gb SFB but because of the length and quality of cable I’m not getting anywhere near 10gb at the other end?
A bit of advice would be much appreciated as it's rather confusing!!
Thanks in advance!
Chris H
Hi chrish1984,
I understand the distances now (I got confused before). I did find a solution but we still need to get back to our original problem, qouted below:

If I procure a 1gb distribution switch, how will this connect to the 10gb port on the core switch?
I found the model M4100-12GF, this will be the switch under the core switch (if we can use a 1G port from the core switch). For the 4 other switch, I am suggesting models M4100-26G or M4100-50G. If there is no choice but to use the 10G, I'll see if I can find another solution and get back to you on that.
Thanks,

Hello chrish1984,
Welcome to the communtiy!
I believe you can still get 10gb connection when using the correct cables and SFP modules. See this article, basically have a (little) similarity to your issue. I can probably recommend some products that you can use.
If you have questions, I will be happy to assist.
Thanks,

Hello chrish1984,
I would like to introduce you to our high speed 10-Gigabit switches family. You may have to decide first on how many ports you are going to utilize, do you already have swicthes on the locations? I am quite concerned about the OM1 cables might not deliver 10Gb (just like what I have mentioned on my first post you'll need to use the correct cables and modules to reach 10Gb speed on the distance you mentioned, see this article).
If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks,
