FS728TP Ping Query

Bigger issue than what I will describe below, but I'll shorten it for starters as I think this might be the cause.

I've got a number of switches linked together, three of them being FS728TP's, as well as a GS724T. There are VLANs setup on all the switches, with the GS724T routing between the VLANs, and as far as I can see all working OK.

Using the Ping utility in the GUI, if I log onto the GS724T I can ping a server which is physically connected to that switch, and it responds OK. It seems that I can also ping equipment connected to all other switches from the GUI.

However, if I log into any of the FS728TP switches I can't ping anything connected directly to it, or connected to any other switch including the GS724T. What could stop this from happening?

Note that I I can ping anything across all switches from the server connected to the GS724T.

The ports linking the switches together are configured to tag all VLANs, including the management VLAN.

The bigger picture is that I want to connect the switches to an NTP server. The GS724T will connect OK (and the server is physically connected to it), but none of the FS728TP switches will connect.

Thanks in advance

    StuSmith,

    Welcome to the community! :)

Are the 3 FS728TP switches directly connected to the GS724T?  Or, are all switches daisy-chained?

What VLANs are configured in the FS728TP and GS724T switches?

It would be best if you post a detailed diagram of your network setup.

Hopefully there's a switch layout attached, with added detail. Hope it makes sense.

Basically, I can't ping the time server PC from the GUI on any switch other than the GS724T it is physically connected to. Likewise I can't ping any device from the GUI of the switch that that device is physically connected to.

All switches are running the latest firmware.

    StuSmith,

Make sure that all of your FS728TPv2 switches are on the latest firmware version. The latest firmware is v5.0.2.50 and you can download it here.

About your FSM726 and GS724T switches, what is their specific model number?  Is it FSM726v2 and GS724Tv4 respectively? Make sure that both switches are also in the latest firmware version.

The bigger picture is that I want to connect the switches to an NTP server. The GS724T will connect OK (and the server is physically connected to it), but none of the FS728TP switches will connect.

Found out that you are located in UK.  Kindly access the link below:

    https://www.galsys.co.uk/time-server/uk-time-server.html

    Kindly try the steps below:

    1. On the web-GUI of the FS728TPv2, go to System > Management > Time > SNTP Server Configuration.

              a. In the Server Type list, select DNS.

              b. In the Address Field, enter 0.uk.pool.ntp.org (refer to the link I shared above).

              c. In the Port field, set it to 123.

              d. In the Priority field, enter 1.

              e. In the version field, enter 4.

              f. Click Add

    2. Do the same procedure in step 1 but this time enter another NTP time server.

              a. In the Server Type list, select DNS.

              b. In the Address Field, enter 1.uk.pool.ntp.org (refer again to the link I shared above).

              c. In the Port field, set it to 123.

              d. In the Priority field, enter 2.

              e. In the version field, enter 4.

              f. Click Add

    3. On the web-GUI of the FS728TPv2, go to System > Management > DNS > DNS Configuration.

             a. Select Enable on the DNS Status

             b. In the DNS Server field, enter the IP Address of your DNS server.

             c. Click Add.

As reference, access the article below:

How do I set the named Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) server using the web interface on my mana...

Note: You may also want to try using the equivalent IP addresses of both 0.uk.pool.ntp.org and 1.uk.pool.ntp.org (refer to the link I shared above) and go through the steps above again to further isolate the problem.

About the ping query, let us try below to isolate the problem:

    1. Disconnect one FS728TPv2 from the existing network then go to Maintenance > Troubleshooting > Ping.  Try to ping the devices directly connected to it.  Are you able to get replies?

    2. From step 1, set any port to be a member of the Management VLAN.  Connect a PC to that port and set a static IP address correctly on it. Then, ping the PC. Are you able to get replies?

Thanks for responses up to now. Please bear in mind I'm no IT guy, electronics is my background.

Ignore the NTP issue for now (the network isn't connected to the outside world, hence the local time server PC).

      Hardware / software versions...

      FSM726v3 (8.0.1.36)

      FS728TPv2 (5.0.2.50)

      GS724Tv4 (6.3.1.34)

Refering again to the diagram, the time server PC connected to the GS724T (VLAN 110, IP address 192.168.10.2) can ping the device on the FS728TP (VLAN 101, IP address 10.127.68.232), as the VLAN routing configuration allows this.

Pinging 10.127.68.232 from the GUI of the GS724T switch yields...

         Reply From 10.127.68.232: icmp_seq = 0. time= 0 usec.
         Reply From 10.127.68.232: icmp_seq = 1. time= 0 usec.
         Reply From 10.127.68.232: icmp_seq = 2. time= 0 usec.
         Tx = 3, Rx = 3 Min/Max/Avg RTT = 0/0/0 msec

However, trying to ping 10.127.68.232 from the GUI of the switch it is connected to yields...

         Tx = 1, Rx = 0 Min/Max/Avg RTT = 0/0/0 msec

Note that in the routing configuration there is no entry for the VLAN 1, as the switch throws it out with the error message "Error! VLAN Routing mode cannot be enabled on Management VLAN"

As per your suggestion I've also added the port that the device is connected to into VLAN 1 (as well as its original VLAN 101) and still no ping is possible.

      Thanks again in advance.

      StuSmith,

I apologize for the late response.  To further isolate the problem, let us try to factory reset on of your FS728TPv2 switches.  Disconnect one FS728TPv2 from the existing network and perform a factory reset on it.

Afterwards, using the default settings, connect a PC1 to port 1 (or any port) and connect PC 2 to port 2 (or any port).  Set a static IP address on both PC1 and PC2 that is within the same IP address range.  For example: set 192.168.2.8 on PC1 and 192.168.2.9 on PC2.  Then, on the FS728TPv2 web-GUI, go to Maintenance > Troubleshooting > Ping.  Try to ping the devices directly connected to it.  Are you able to get replies?

Isn't this part of the issue though?

I've factory reset the switch, which gives the switch a default IP address of 192.168.0.239 and a mask of 255.255.255.0

I've then connected two PCs into two ports, say ports 1 and 2 with IP addresses of 192.168.10.231 and 192.168.10.56, each with a mask of 255.255.255.0

These two PCs can ping each other, but obviously can't log into the GUI as its not in the same subnet.

A third PC is also connected, with an IP address of 192.168.0.231, hence will log into the GUI. But once in the GUI, you can't ping either of the PCs on the 192.168.10.x range (unless I open up the mask).

On the normal setup (with the GS724T routing VLANs), lets say that port 1 is in VLAN_x, and port 2 is in VLAN_y.

The PC now in VLAN_x will still be able to ping the PC in VLAN_y, because of the VLAN routing, but the third PC on the default VLAN (logged into the GUI) still won't be able to ping either PC because you're not allowed to route the management VLAN.

I'm OK with why this doesn't work, I think I was kidding myself that because you're logged into the management GUI you should be able to ping anything physically connected to it.

Is it worth me then opening another discussion regarding my bigger issue as to why the switches, other than the GS724T, won't sync with my local time server?

Thanks for everything up to now.
